Time capsule mystery

 photo 1a599a69-bd6f-4593-af09-4432090ad94c_zpsf32a0f8a.jpg

I’m not sure if it was the third or fourth grade, but I remember picking a few choice items from my bedroom to add to our class time capsule.  We were told that upon graduating, the time capsule would be lifted out of the ground and we would get our things back.

Where is the time capsule now?

Unless I missed the memo, I don’t believe anyone dug that old capsule up again.  Graduation came and went… in fact, it was almost 20 years ago.  (yes, I’m  aging myself again).  I feel fine aging myself here though.  Seems that according to the wine tasting lady at Trader Joe’s yesterday, I look under 30… she told me that she had a 30-year-old daughter that she compared all young women to.  Fortunately for me, her daughter must look pretty awful for her age.  Anyhow, I want to know where my time capsule goodies are and whether I will ever get them back.  I N.E.E.D. to know what I added to it.

Here are some thoughts (clearly I am old b/c my memory has failed me!):
  1. Aquanet hairspray
  2. Rubber bands for my braces
  3. A picture of my feathered hair
  4. My M.C. hammer pants
  5. A Cindy Lauper album

The Weather Report

Never did I think anyone would get excited to watch the weather on a news station, never mind jump up and down on the couch as soon as it came on. Tonight, my daughters proved me wrong. Their reaction was about the same as mine as a kiddo at my first NKOTB concert.  For those of you who do not know what NKOTB stands for, first off, shame on you!  NKOTB equates to the New Kids On The Block, and if you didn’t get that the first time around, you clearly did NOT have good taste in men since Donny Whalberg was beyond perfect back in the day.

Back on track now (sorry, I got a little too excited there)… Now for the MOST exciting part of this post… THE WEATHER!

Talia had a homework assignment today that involved watching the weather report.  Fortunately, we were able to catch the 6:00pm news (which was when the giddy and earthshaking behavior began).  Unfortunately, somewhere in my travels, I misplaced the piece of paper her homework assignment was on.  Even more unfortunate, the only part of her assignment I remembered reading was “blah blah… watch the weather… blah blah… _______.  The ( insert above the blank line ) was what needed to be filled in.  Just like the blank line shown, my mind = blank.

Like any great mother, when my ever so responsible daughter asked where her homework was, so she could finish it, I responded… “Oh, don’t worry about it.  You can just do it in the morning.”  I was hoping that the piece of paper would miraculously appear and she could complete it in the morning.  You see, although I am not sure what needs to be written above the pretty black line, I took notes.  Yes, lot’s and lot’s of notes.  A half page filled with notes about… drum roll please… THE WEATHER OF COURSE!  Maybe I should have been the one jumping up and down on my couch since I haven’t taken notes like that since my college years. I have yet to find her assignment & I have yet to tell my husband (he’ll never let me forget this one since this is typically the type of thing I yell at him for).  This post is the result of me… taking a break…from looking for the piece of paper I have searched for all night.

Lock Down Drills

The Shift

I never thought I would have to hear my 6-year-old tell me that

“today in school, they practiced lock down drills.”

My first reaction was a gasp, then an exhale.  One deep breath later, I tried to relax.  Yes, I thought, this is something the schools need to do.

I’m glad that my daughter’s school is practicing lock down drills.  I am glad she understands that it is important to pay attention and follow certain rules.  I am happy with how she described the teacher’s explanations about the drills and why they were doing them.  I am NOT glad that we live in a world where innocent people have to worry about dangers like school shootings.  I am not happy that my 5 and 6-year-old children need to learn how important it is to know what to do if they are ever (hopefully NEVER) in a situation where a lock down drill is no longer “just a drill”.

It’s been a few hours since she told me about the drills.  While listening, I made every effort to look calm, but my stomach was twisting and turning.  It killed me to stay positive during our conversation.  As I listened to my little girl explaining the drills, all I could think of was her innocence.  I am happy that she doesn’t understand the severity of what could occur, but at the same time, I want her to.  I want her to have her eyes open to the dangers of this world.  I want for her to know that if anything were to happen at her school, that she has to listen to her teachers, and do EXACTLY as they say.  I want her to do everything she possibly can to stay out of harms way.  There are so many things I wish she understood and at the same time, wish she never had to!

I do know that she is still too young to understand our world, the dangers in it, and why some people do the things they do. For now, I’m happy with the world her mind lives in.  I just wish it was my world too.

Giggle With The Peppa Pig Happy Mrs. Chicken App

If you love Peppa Pig, then the Peppa Pig Happy Mrs. Chicken App is a must have! Muddle Puddles, the chicken coup, and maze, are just 3 of the 5 interactive games featured in the app. The games, sticker book, fantastic graphics and sounds will have you and your children laughing in no time.

Like most children’s apps I download, I try to test them myself before letting my girls play them. The Chicken Coop was the first game I tried. Immediately, I was laughing at the cute chicken popping out eggs, watching them hatch and then guiding the little chickens to their respective homes. The sound effects were adorable! Moments later, my girls were by my side, begging to play. I’m not embarrassed to say, that I did not relinquish my iPad immediately.

As soon as my daughters began playing Peppa Pig Happy Mrs. Chicken, the room was filled with laughter, counting, and the two of them root for one another as they played the game. This interactive app is not only educational, it helps build hand eye coordination, teaches problem solving, is highly intuitive, and most of all fun!

Best Tablets For Kids

If you are shopping for a child this holiday season, choosing the right tablet for him/her might be on your to do checklist.  Children love technology and manufacturers love to make their products the most appealing.  Since my daughters were born, they have been introduced to various technological products through the years.  Being a technology lover myself, I never really shied away from buying them the latest products on the shelves.  Unfortunately, my excitement has been known to get the best of me, and my choices have not always been suitable for their age.

Now, I am not saying that I buy inappropriate things for my children… I have bought them products that were a bit too advanced for their little hands though.  Once again, the gift giving season is here and both girls want their own tablets. I decided to investigate and share the results with my readers.

Fuhu NABI & NABI2 Tablet

The NABI and NABI2 are popping up everywhere. Although the NABI has been around for more than a year, it was not until a month ago that I heard about it. I decided to find out what the excitement over this 7 inch tablet was all about. Manufactured by Fuhu, the NABI is an Android Tablet specifically designed for kids. I love their motto “Learn. Play. Grow. For Life.” Based on customer comments, the NABI is also suitable for toddlers. Similar to the iPad, NABI has a cloud for syncing and storing information. Other key features include an e-reader, a treasure box, chore list, parental controls, top billboard songs available for download, and even live streaming for those Saturday morning shows while mom and dad have to run errands. Overall, it is one of the most robust tablets specific to children yet, also enjoyable for mom or dad.

LeapFrog LeapPad2 Explorer

Although my girls already have the LeapPad, I had to include it on my list.  Last Christmas, the LeapPad was one of the hottest sellers.  Finding one to buy was nearly impossible.  Fortunately, I stumbled upon 2… IN PINK!  Christmas morning came and my girls had no interest in their LeapPads.  It was disappointing to say the least.  Little did I know then, but they just weren’t ready for them.  This year, the LeapPads have become their traveling companions.  The games are great but can be pricey.  If you have an early reader, the LeapFrog website has great books available for download.  What I love most about the books is the various ways your child can read them.  The words can be highlighted as the LeapPad reads to your child.  If your child is trying to read a book by him/herself and get’s stuck on a word.  Simply pressing on the word will make the tablet read it out loud.  Overall, a great purchase for children 5 and up.

Politics | Our Economy | Top 10 Best Books

Whether Democrat, Republican, Libertarian… possibly an anarchist, communist… or whatever you choose to be, these books shine light (or darkness), on the fate of our economy and definitely give you much needed food for thought.  Similar to everything in our world, there are two sides to every story.  Whether the authors below are one sided or not, each has a viewpoint that is easy to be taken by.  From Nobel Peace Prize to Pulitzer Prize winners, the information shared in the books below divulge secrets, in-depth reviews and more about politics, the economic state of our government and the reality of the world we currently live in.

1
Our Divided Political Heart: The Battle for the American Idea in an Age of Discontent

Our Divided Political Heart will be the must-read book of the 2012 election campaign. Offering an incisive analysis of how hyper-individualism is poisoning the nation’s political atmosphere, E. J. Dionne Jr. argues that Americans can’t agree on who we are because we can’t agree on who we’ve been, or what it is, philosophically and spiritually, that makes us Americans. Dionne takes on the Tea Party’s distortions of American history and shows that the true American tradition points not to radical individualism, but to a balance between our love of individualism and our devotion to community.
Dionne offers both a fascinating tour of American history—from the Founding Fathers to Clay and Lincoln and on to the Populists, the Progressives and the New Dealers—and also an analysis of our current politics that shatters conventional wisdom. The true American idea, far from endorsing government inaction or indifference, has always viewed the federal government as an active and constructive partner with the rest of society in promoting prosperity, opportunity, and American greatness.
The ability of the American system to self-correct is its greatest asset and Dionne challenges progressives to embrace the American story. Our fractious but productive past offers us the resources both to rediscover the idea of progress and to put an end to our fears of decline. Our Divided Political Heart will be required reading for all who seek a path out of our current impasse.

2
Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else

There has always been some gap between rich and poor in this country, but in the last few decades what it means to be rich has changed dramatically. Alarmingly, the greatest income gap is not between the 1 percent and the 99 percent, but within the wealthiest 1 percent of our nation–as the merely wealthy are left behind by the rapidly expanding fortunes of the new global super-rich. Forget the 1 percent; Plutocrats proves that it is the wealthiest 0.1 percent who are outpacing the rest of us at break-neck speed.
What’s changed is more than numbers. Today, most colossal fortunes are new, not inherited–amassed by perceptive businessmen who see themselves as deserving victors in a cut-throat international competition. As a transglobal class of successful professionals, today’s self-made oligarchs often feel they have more in common with one another than with their countrymen back home. Bringing together the economics and psychology of these new super-rich, Plutocrats puts us inside a league very much of its own, with its own rules.

3
End This Depression Now!

A call-to-arms from Nobel Prize–winning economist and best-selling author Paul Krugman.
The Great Recession is more than four years old—and counting. Yet, as Paul Krugman points out in this powerful volley, “Nations rich in resources, talent, and knowledge—all the ingredients for prosperity and a decent standard of living for all—remain in a state of intense pain.”
How bad have things gotten? How did we get stuck in what now can only be called a depression? And above all, how do we free ourselves? Krugman pursues these questions with his characteristic lucidity and insight. He has a powerful message for anyone who has suffered over these past four years—a quick, strong recovery is just one step away, if our leaders can find the “intellectual clarity and political will” to end this depression now.

4
Griftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American History

The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The grifter class—made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding—has been growing in power, and the crisis was only one terrifying manifestation of how they’ve hijacked America’s political and economic life.

Matt Taibbi has combined deep sources, trailblazing reportage, and provocative analysis to create the most lucid, emotionally galvanizing account yet written of this ongoing American crisis. He offers fresh reporting on the backroom deals of the bailout; tells the story of Goldman Sachs, the “vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity”; and uncovers the hidden commodities bubble that transferred billions of dollars to Wall Street while creating food shortages around the world.

This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the labyrinthine inner workings of this country, and the profound consequences for us all.

5
Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power

“One of my favorite ideas is, never to keep an unnecessary soldier,” Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1792. Neither Jefferson nor the other Founders could ever have envisioned the modern national security state, with its tens of thousands of “privateers”; its bloated Department of Homeland Security; its rusting nuclear weapons, ill-maintained and difficult to dismantle; and its strange fascination with an unproven counterinsurgency doctrine.
Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow’s Drift argues that we’ve drifted away from America’s original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. To understand how we’ve arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today’s war in Afghanistan, along the way exploring the disturbing rise of executive authority, the gradual outsourcing of our war-making capabilities to private companies, the plummeting percentage of American families whose children fight our constant wars for us, and even the changing fortunes of G.I. Joe. She offers up a fresh, unsparing appraisal of Reagan’s radical presidency. Ultimately, she shows us just how much we stand to lose by allowing the priorities of the national security state to overpower our political discourse.
Sensible yet provocative, dead serious yet seriously funny, Drift will reinvigorate a “loud and jangly” political debate about how, when, and where to apply America’s strength and power–and who gets to make those decisions.

6
The Price of Inequality: How Today’s Divided Society Endangers Our Future

A forceful argument against America’s vicious circle of growing inequality by the Nobel Prize–winning economist.
The top 1 percent of Americans control 40 percent of the nation’s wealth. And, as Joseph E. Stiglitz explains, while those at the top enjoy the best health care, education, and benefits of wealth, they fail to realize that “their fate is bound up with how the other 99 percent live.”
Stiglitz draws on his deep understanding of economics to show that growing inequality is not inevitable: moneyed interests compound their wealth by stifling true, dynamic capitalism. They have made America the most unequal advanced industrial country while crippling growth, trampling on the rule of law, and undermining democracy. The result: a divided society that cannot tackle its most pressing problems. With characteristic insight, Stiglitz examines our current state, then teases out its implications for democracy, for monetary and budgetary policy, and for globalization. He closes with a plan for a more just and prosperous future.

7
Who Stole the American Dream?

Pulitzer Prize winner Hedrick Smith’s new book is an extraordinary achievement, an eye-opening account of how, over the past four decades, the American Dream has been dismantled and we became two Americas.
In his bestselling The Russians, Smith took millions of readers inside the Soviet Union. In The Power Game, he took us inside Washington’s corridors of power. Now Smith takes us across America to show how seismic changes, sparked by a sequence of landmark political and economic decisions, have transformed America. As only a veteran reporter can, Smith fits the puzzle together, starting with Lewis Powell’s provocative memo that triggered a political rebellion that dramatically altered the landscape of power from then until today.
This is a book full of surprises and revelations—the accidental beginnings of the 401(k) plan, with disastrous economic consequences for many; the major policy changes that began under Jimmy Carter; how the New Economy disrupted America’s engine of shared prosperity, the “virtuous circle” of growth, and how America lost the title of “Land of Opportunity.” Smith documents the transfer of $6 trillion in middle-class wealth from homeowners to banks even before the housing boom went bust, and how the U.S. policy tilt favoring the rich is stunting America’s economic growth.
This book is essential reading for all of us who want to understand America today, or why average Americans are struggling to keep afloat. Smith reveals how pivotal laws and policies were altered while the public wasn’t looking, how Congress often ignores public opinion, why moderate politicians got shoved to the sidelines, and how Wall Street often wins politically by hiring over 1,400 former government officials as lobbyists.
Smith talks to a wide range of people, telling the stories of Americans high and low. From political leaders such as Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and Martin Luther King, Jr., to CEOs such as Al Dunlap, Bob Galvin, and Andy Grove, to heartland Middle Americans such as airline mechanic Pat O’Neill, software systems manager Kristine Serrano, small businessman John Terboss, and subcontractor Eliseo Guardado, Smith puts a human face on how middle-class America and the American Dream have been undermined.
This magnificent work of history and reportage is filled with the penetrating insights, provocative discoveries, and the great empathy of a master journalist. Finally, Smith offers ideas for restoring America’s great promise and reclaiming the American Dream.

The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted

There was a time, not so very long ago, when perfectly rational people ran the Republican Party. So how did the party of Lincoln become the party of lunatics? That is what this book aims to answer. Fear not, the Dems come in for their share of tough talk— they are zombies, a party of the living dead.
Mike Lofgren came to Washington in the early eighties—those halcyon, post–Nixonian glory days—for what he imagined would be a short stint on Capitol Hill. He has witnessed quite a few low points in his twenty-eight years on the Hill—but none quite so pitiful as the antics of the current crop of legislators whom we appear to have elected.
Based on the explosive article Lofgren wrote when he resigned in disgust after the debt ceiling crisis, The Party Is Over is a funny and impassioned exposé of everything that is wrong with Washington. Obama and his tired cohorts are no angels but they have nothing on the Republicans, whose wily strategists are bankrupting the country one craven vote at a time. Be prepared for some fireworks.

9
The New New Deal: The Hidden Story of Change in the Obama Era

In a riveting account based on new documents and interviews with more than 400 sources on both sides of the aisle, award-winning reporter Michael Grunwald reveals the vivid story behind President Obama’s $800 billion stimulus bill, one of the most important and least understood pieces of legislation in the history of the country. Grunwald’s meticulous reporting shows how the stimulus, though reviled on the right and the left, helped prevent a depression while jump-starting the president’s agenda for lasting change. As ambitious and far-reaching as FDR’s New Deal, the Recovery Act is a down payment on the nation’s economic and environmental future, the purest distillation of change in the Obama era.
The stimulus has launched a transition to a clean-energy economy, doubled our renewable power, and financed unprecedented investments in energy efficiency, a smarter grid, electric cars, advanced biofuels, and green manufacturing. It is computerizing America’s pen-and-paper medical system. Its Race to the Top is the boldest education reform in U.S. history. It has put in place the biggest middle-class tax cuts in a generation, the largest research investments ever, and the most extensive infrastructure investments since Eisenhower’s interstate highway system. It includes the largest expansion of antipoverty programs since the Great Society, lifting millions of Americans above the poverty line, reducing homelessness, and modernizing unemployment insurance. Like the first New Deal, Obama’s stimulus has created legacies that last: the world’s largest wind and solar projects, a new battery industry, a fledgling high-speed rail network, and the world’s highest-speed Internet network.
Michael Grunwald goes behind the scenes—sitting in on cabinet meetings, as well as recounting the secret strategy sessions where Republicans devised their resistance to Obama—to show how the stimulus was born, how it fueled a resurgence on the right, and how it is changing America. The New New Deal shatters the conventional Washington narrative and it will redefine the way Obama’s first term is perceived.

It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism

Acrimony and hyperpartisanship have seeped into every part of the political process. Congress is deadlocked and its approval ratings are at record lows. America’s two main political parties have given up their traditions of compromise, endangering our very system of constitutional democracy. And one of these parties has taken on the role of insurgent outlier; the Republicans have become ideologically extreme, scornful of compromise, and ardently opposed to the established social and economic policy regime.
In It’s Even Worse Than It Looks, congressional scholars Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein identify two overriding problems that have led Congress—and the United States—to the brink of institutional collapse. The first is the serious mismatch between our political parties, which have become as vehemently adversarial as parliamentary parties, and a governing system that, unlike a parliamentary democracy, makes it extremely difficult for majorities to act. Second, while both parties participate in tribal warfare, both sides are not equally culpable. The political system faces what the authors call “asymmetric polarization,” with the Republican Party implacably refusing to allow anything that might help the Democrats politically, no matter the cost.
With dysfunction rooted in long-term political trends, a coarsened political culture and a new partisan media, the authors conclude that there is no “silver bullet” reform that can solve everything. But they offer a panoply of useful ideas and reforms, endorsing some solutions, like greater public participation and institutional restructuring of the House and Senate, while debunking others, like independent or third-party candidates. Above all, they call on the media as well as the public at large to focus on the true causes of dysfunction rather than just throwing the bums out every election cycle. Until voters learn to act strategically to reward problem solving and punish obstruction, American democracy will remain in serious danger.
