Signs – Humanity – Beauty

Days of signs, humanity and much beauty in this world…

GNC Live Well
As I sat in my living room this evening, I was glued to my television. Rarely a tv watcher, tonight seemed typical of the past few days for me. On tv this evening was the 2012 MDA show of strength, a benefit to raise awareness for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The past few days have been emotionally intense. Between my natural emotional state, which includes feeling too much for those less fortunate and taking on emotions even when I am not faced with certain realities head on, I have had my share of tears. For the first time in years, I have been fortunate to notice the many people on-line that I am connected to, as well as others through my daily travels that are making an attempt at raising awareness in some way or another. On Facebook alone, I have had the pleasure of liking and shedding a tear or two for so many touching stories. Whether related to people or animals, the beauty has overwhelmed me.
There was a picture of a set of infant twins in a hospital. An incredible nurse fought for the twins to be allowed to sleep with one another. One of the twin girls was not expected to live. The stronger of the two wrapped her arm around her sister. The touch of her arm slowed her sister’s heart rate and she calmed down. This was just the beginning of her healing. The doctors had not believed she would make it through the night. She did… and then some.
Another story I had the luxury of reading was that of a very sick boy in a hospital. His dog, laying on the end of his hospital bed as he slept… I have no words to express the beauty of hearing stories like that.
Today, after a truly exceptional day with my daughters, I took them out to eat. At the restaurant, we were seated next to a family with two boys in wheelchairs. Both were hooked up to multiple tubes. My daughter’s normally don’t pay much attention when they see others in a wheelchair because they are used to it between neighbors and other people we know. This time was different. I asked my daughter why she was staring and she replied, “because mommy, they look sad. They don’t look like the people we know.” It’s hard for me to admit this but she was right.
On our way home, I felt an overwhelming urge to visit a spot which is special for our family a reminder of our puppy Lola who passed away too early in her life. As my girls and I walked, the world seemed quiet, almost still. The air was fresh and none of us spoke. It was almost as if we had a silent agreement just to be in the moment. It was beautiful and surreal.
Tonight’s show was filled with amazing stories. One that stood out and touched my heart was told by a firefighter with 3 daughters. One of his daughters has MD. She is a 9-year-old twin. Her father, the firefighter, was recently diagnosed with a life threatening illness himself. He has ALS. Since his daughter was diagnosed with MD, he has done so much to help raise money and awareness for the disease. It just seems unfair that he now, has to worry about being able to take care of himself when all he wants to do is take care of his beautiful, young daughter. Each story was difficult to hear but, the amount of people helping with the cause and the strength that exuded from each one represented something greater.
The past few days have been pretty amazing regardless of all my tears (minus that I may have lost some water weight)… Although it may be that I have not paid enough attention to everything around me, I would like to believe that all the signs that have popped up every time I turn, are a direct reflection of a changing world. One which more people are aware of things going on around us, and more willing to play apart in helping those less fortunate. There is truly beauty in our world and many more amazing people than I ever dreamed of. Something has changed in the air. Today’s air, while visiting my angel Lola was just the beginning of many more signs to come.

Wildlife In Suburbia And Some Strange People

Buy Gift Cards That Never ExpireA Quiet Life In Suburbia Turned Upside Down In Less Than 12 Hours…

It was dark… very, very dark… Danny and Cooper left for a walk… as they strolled down the driveway, they saw two spooky looking eyes staring at them.  Within seconds, the eyes were overshadowed by the screaming they heard coming from the creature in front of them.  Petrified, the two froze for a moment, then turned and sprinted back up the driveway.  6 legs, moving as fast as they could!  My tough looking husband and really tough looking bulldog, finally made it into our home.  Breathing heavily and emotionally scarred the two of them could barely use their vocal chords.  I asked what was wrong.  Danny replied, “A fox!  You Didn’t Hear that???”  “No,” I said.  He continued to tell me how scary it was, and how it basically attacked them with the awful scream.  I could tell he felt violated.

This morning… Danny had taken Talia to breakfast with dad morning at her school, leaving Julia and I home with the dogs.  As I was getting ready for work, both dogs began  barking in an aggressive manner.  I looked out the window to see what all the fuss was about.  There it was… right in front of me, showing no fear… a fox!  It was staring right at me and not moving an inch.  Our eyes locked, thus beginning the stare down.  Thanks to the “Stare Master” My Little Pony episode I watched with the girls, Moments into the stare down, both dogs were still barking but running from the front window to the back door slider.  The dogs were such a big distraction that I had no choice but to put up my white flag.  The fox won this time… I turned to see what the dogs were barking at in our backyard and noticed yet another fox.  My house was surrounded and I was being kept hostage.  Fortunately, they dispersed soon after, Danny came home and I was able to leave for work.  As I drove down my street, in front of my very own eyes was another fox!  The fox was not only in the middle of the street, it was carrying an animal in its mouth.  Disgusted, I quickly drove off.  Thinking it was time to call our Animal Control officer regarding the “fox issue” we were having, I pulled up in front of our local library.

While at the stop sign in front of the library, a large sign caught my eye… The large black lettering was hard to ignore… JUNE 7th, 7PM COYOTE AWARENESS MEETING AT THE LIBRARY!  Great, never mind the fox, now I have to deal with Coyotes.  Maybe they could have a FOX AWARENESS MEETING as well.  Unfortunately, I saw the sign a bit too late as June 7th has passed.  Driving along, I neared our towns Police Station and Dunkin Donuts.  In front of the Dunkin Donuts (directly across from the Police Station and on a main road), I saw a large table and two men standing behind it.  They were on the sidewalk and had signs and posters hanging from the table.  Being a bit nosy, I slowed down… Yes, I was one of “those” people today.  You know, the ones that slow down because they are nosy stopping traffic everywhere for no good reason.  Anyhow, what I saw was overwhelming.  The posters were of our very own President Obama.  His face had been altered on them though.  They had moustaches on them, similar to the German leader I don’t like mentioning the name of.  The men were verbal about world peace and stopping the war… I have no more words.

A Turtles Tale: Sammy’s Adventures… And A Few Tears

.

After a busy day of gallivanting with my girls, we were finally home and ready to settle in for the night.  After supper, it was time to get cozy on the couch with my little ones and watch a movie.  Browsing through Netflix on our Apple TV, we found the movie of the night!  ”A Turtles Tale: Sammy’s Adventures.”

Generally, when I watch children’s movies, they start out pretty harmless.  About one-third of the way, I am forced to shed a few tears… yes, I cry during children’s movies too… Moving on… fortunately, in the back of my head, through those awful tears, I am well aware that the movie will end well, the great characters happy and the villain no longer having the upper hand.  ”A Turtles Tale” was a little different. Although the very beginning gave me a good idea of the outcome, it also started off with a bang.  Right away, tears were streaming down my face.  I watched as a young turtle named Sammy was left alone shortly after he hatched.  I turned my head so my girls wouldn’t see that I clearly needed a tissue…  I felt pathetic!

With that, I did what any other mother would do… I left the room.  It didn’t take long for me to re-enter.  I had to know what was going to happen next.  My motherly instinct came out and all I could think of was protecting that poor little Turtle.  Did I mention how darn cute he was?  With a book and a box of tissues in hand, I plopped myself back on the couch and pretended to read as I watched the movie peering above my book.  I was doing the right thing.  If I did cry, I had a shield… The book.  Fortunately, the book came in handy.  I cried quite a few times during the movie. Laughter was not a problem either!  As far as my girls are concerned, I am starting to wonder if they actually pay attention to what is happening in movies or are just too busy watching the cute little characters on TV.  There is another side of me that wonders if they could have some sadistic traits since every time I shed a tear, one of them had a smile on their face.  Rating the movie, I give it 2 thumbs up or 5 stars… Whatever you think is better!  It was great, minus the snot nosed parent watching it.

Going Green – Our 30 Day Quest Continued…

Day Sixteen, February 21st
Green Change: Dogs Gone Green

Since my whole family is going green, it only makes sense to incorporate my dogs.  Fortunately, our pet store brand dog food has almost run out.  No better time than now to start incorporating healthy and organic dog food into their diets.  After a visit to Pet Smart, a conversation with a store attendant and a lengthy introduction into the world of organic pet food, I walked out of the store with a smallish bag of certified-organic pet food which meets the strict USDA standards.  This means no hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, and more… hmm… I wonder if the lack of hormones will help Cooper with his hyperactive behavior?  Let’s hope so!

Day Seventeen, February 22nd
Green Change: Dryer Ducts Need Cleaning?

I once read that you should clean dryer ducts on occasion.  Although, I never thought to do this before, I figured why not?  Just to make sure that I was not dreaming when I read this, I chose to rely on Google and look it up.  To my surprise, a ton of articles popped up on my computer screen addressing dryer ducts and the need to clean them!  Proud I remembered this, I decided to read on a bit.  Did you know cleaning a dryer duct poses less of a chance for a fire hazard?  Definitely something I am not prepared to deal with.  Besides that, small and large loads may take longer to dry if the ducts are not clean.  Although these things seem pretty obvious, cleaning our dryer ducts are not exactly on the top of my daily to do list.  Fortunately, they still are not since my DH took care of it for me.  Positive – they are clean!

Don’t forget to take a look at my Trending Green page!  Check out how far our family has come… each day is getting a little harder but more rewarding at the same time!

iBooks Author! Apple, Apps, & Missing My 13in MacBook Pro :(

What could be more depressing? Still missing my MacBook Pro or realizing that iBooks Author is not available on my trusty iPad? Well, basically both! As many of you know, my MacBook Pro is currently in the arms of another! I sold it on line and am glad I no longer know the name or address of the person it was sold to. I fear that I would go to their home and demand he/she give it back to me! Unfortunately, after being lucky enough to have obtained a beautiful 27 inch Mac computer, I cannot justify purchasing another MacBook Pro. It saddens me even more now that I cannot utilize this fantastic new app available to the public.

Because the majority of my work is done while on the road, and in the comfort of my living room, my home office misses me considerably. So does my pretty 27 inch shiny screen on my new Mac. I don’t feel too bad though, the computer still brings much enjoyment to my little beans at home. I suppose it is still worth having just for that.

Although I have not had the opportunity to use iBooks Author, I do want to share why I believe it is so wonderful. From what I have seen, it makes creating a book easy! Second, giving budding authors the ability to publish themselves, without losing the creative angle they have in mind is quite amazing! I understand many people feel otherwise. I have hear statments implying that Apple is controlling the author’s rights to their own work by allowing you to sell ONLY on their site. Honestly though, if you don’t like it, dont use it! Apple is giving YOU the opportunity to do what YOU may never have had the guts to do, or think possible. KUDDOS TO APPLE! I think it is fabulous. I can only hope it enables many a writer to get creative, adventurous and have fun doing so!

Although I will not be using iBooks Author any time soon… unless you want to spare a MacBook for me, I cannot wait to purchase new creations through iBooks Author! Write Now!!!

WILD HORSES, ANIMAL RIGHTS, NEVADA – PRESERVE THE MUSTANG!

My morning took a turn for the worst once I turned my computer on. Along came Yahoo (one of my home pages)… A striking article titled “Wild horses: Billionaire’s wife vs. Nev. Rancher” caught my eye. Generally, I don’t like to watch podcasts or broadcasts but would prefer to read an article. Some though, never have the full impact unless you actually watch them.

Yahoo’s story, regarding the wild horses in Nevada, fall into the “must watch” category. According to reports, Nevada has an abundance of wild horses. Today’s video, revolved around a Billionaire’s wife, and her distaste for what the ranchers in Nevada stand for. Her take is to preserve the horses. The ranchers believe they have 3 to 5 times the number of wild horses the land can sustain, and need some relief. Ranchers as well as others speak of round ups, or mass slaughters. There has been mention of selling them for personal use, which basically means to be slaughtered. It is sick! With round ups, the horses lose their social structure. It is like taking a baby from a mother. If one of my children were taken from me, I am not sure how I would move on with life. It is no different when this is all the horses know. In my opinion, this is similar to a holocaust environment (yes, I understand that is a bold statement). This is their home. Those who are greedy and feel the need to remove the horses from their homes should have theirs taken away as well.

The video creates quite a stir in my mind but I believe there are options that have not been entertained as of yet. As a lover of horses, it is hard for me to take the side of the rancher. I consider living in an area surrounded by graceful horses running wild a luxury. I always dreamed of owning acres of land, surrounded by horses running free, and the smell of fresh air. One of my favorite daydreams includes waking up to a cup of coffee, sitting on my front porch, and being surrounded by horses living on my land. Why not create conservations to protect them all? Create the conservation, and try to monetize their reproduction. Same sex horses in same sex stalls per say. Move many of the horses so that they don’t need to use as much land, and create a few protected areas in other states. Surely Nevada cannot be the only place these horses can be kept and selling them for personal use (whatever that may be), is just plain cruel. In this day and age, do we really need to consider slaughtering these animals? I thought we were above that now.

Regardless of whether the Billionaires wife has money or not, she clearly cares about this cause. I do as well. If I had mass amounts of money to spare, I would send whatever I could her way. I am banning together with those that believe we should PRESERVE THE MUSTANG!

Specifically:

  • Denounce the aggressive wild horse removal campaign currently under way at the behest of special interest groups and at the cost of millions of our tax-dollars.
  • Tell them that your tax-dollars would be better spent on an in-the-wild management program not based on removal.
  • Call for a moratorium on round-ups until actual numbers of wild horses on public lands have been independently assessed
  • Make sure to include your full name and address and to ask for a response on how your representative intends to address your concerns. Be firm but courteous.
