Another Milestone For My Little One

Julia Belle Cotter Is Losing Her First Tooth!

Work was over and I was on my way to start the second and most important part of my day.  Picking up my daughters and spending some quality family time with them.  I phoned my mother to let her know I was on the way.  Little did I know that my simple and typically predictable call would result in another milestone for one of my daughters.

“Julia Belle Cotter has a loose tooth” exclaimed my mother!  I could hear Julia’s excitement in the background.  Not only did she turn 5 a few weeks ago, she finally had her first loose tooth!  She had been waiting for this moment ever since her big sister lost her first tooth.  There is a slight possibility that she accelerated the loosening of the tooth a bit… Regardless, her tooth is loose and she is ecstatic!

Our little Julia has pushed her independence lately.  She no longer wants to be Talia’s little sister and every so often, I hear her mention things like “we are so close in age that it’s like we are twins Talia!”  I realize that she may feel like she is in her sister’s shadows all the time but little does she know what an individual she is.  Filled with personality, a knack for making anyone laugh, the biggest and one of the most beautiful smiles I have ever seen and the innate ability to make people simply adore her without her having to say a single word, she is truly special!  Of course, I am her parent therefore am biased… even so, she, like every other child in the world is beyond special.  She is a blessing like all the rest and I am happy to savor every moment I have with her as well as take each milestone of hers and make it yet another incredible moment she will never forget!

Love you my Julia Belle Cotter!

The Julia Belle Chronicles

Rodale
Julia Belle Cotter is a 5-year-old spitfire with a flair for fashion, making people laugh and crying at the drop of a hat.

From the day Julia was born, she made it clear that her emotions were strong and intense.  If she was hungry, she didn’t let you know by whimpering, then crying a bit louder, and louder… No, Julia’s method of communication was very effective. When Julia decided she was hungry, whether she was playing, cooing or sleeping, she immediately turned those passive and sweet moments into a cry/scream filled with rage and looked somewhat possessed.  On many occasions, I feared that people would think I was ill-treating my child because her cries were so awful.  Although I knew she was ok and would be fine as soon as her mouth hit the bottle, I always broke out in a sweat while preparing it since her screams made me frazzled and frantic.   Some say this is a sign of a gifted child… Although I obviously believe Julia is gifted, I think that her actions were deliberate.  I think she knew exactly what she was doing and secretly got a kick out of watching her mom freak out.

Julia’s ability to drop tears at any moment, make anyone laugh when she feels like it and get her way simply because nobody wants to deal with the fight is uncanny.  Fortunately, tonight, this mom found her weakness and is finally getting back on track in regards to maintaining control and order with Julia.  Julia, being “just 5″ and the youngest of my two daughters, loves to feel like the baby.  In fact, she isn’t ready to admit she is growing up.  For a year now, a typical struggle we have (every morning and night) is Julia’s need to wear tight pants (leggings).  Getting her into a pair of jeans or pj’s that are not leggings is normally inconceivable.  Tonight, I found my weapon!  While Julia was searching her bedtime draw for the perfect pair of leggings to go with her fuzzy pink nightgown, I mentioned how much I missed how she used to wear her cozy pajamas that reminded me of when she was my little baby.  Moments after I said that, I left the room to get ready for bed myself.  Little did I know that comment struck a chord for Julia.  She called to me from her room while I was getting ready for bed and said, “Mommy, come see me quick!  I look like a little baby again!”  Puzzled, I entered her bedroom and sure enough, my 5-year-old fashionista had a pair of normal pajama pants on with a matching top.  I was blown away!  I picked her up, gave her a big hug and said “Awe Jules, you look so cute and cuddly now!  I feel like your my little bean again!”  Her reply, “Mom, maybe tomorrow we should go shopping for some new clothes for me.”  Humph… not sure if I am happy or should be cursing myself right about now.

Bulldog Love | Bulldog Rubs…

First Came Love, Then Came Marriage, Then Came Rocky (The Chihuahua) In A Baby Carriage… Ok, The Girls Came Next… What I Didn’t Expect… What Happened Next… The Arrival Of Cooper (The Bulldog) (AKA Biggest Baby Of Them All))…

February 2011, marked the birth of Cooper Cotter.  Although born and bred in Alabama, Cooper was destined for Boston, Ma.  Surviving a treacherous (a one hour delay) flight, he arrived, crated, aggravated, and smelling a bit putrid in Logan Airport where he was greeted by the amazing couple he would know as mom and dad.

Being quite the decorated fellow, he commanded attention immediately upon arrival. Since he was a puppy, and very cute, he definitely received it. Little did we (the Cotter family) know that the need for attention would never go away. Rather, his needy behavior would only get worse leading to what I like to call the constant bum rub.

Although there is nothing I love more than being home and spending time with my family (including our dogs), I would not mind an evening or two, on my couch, without a 75 pound bulldog named Cooper, pushing against me with his latter half until I rub his bum (which is actually his lower back). Get your mind out of the gutter… again.

THE BEST PARENTING BOOK EVER

LET’S PANIC ABOUT BABIES…

The Cover Says It All… “How to endure and possibly triumph over the adorable tyrant who will ruin your body, destroy your life, liquefy your brain, and finally turn you into a worthwhile human being.”  Whether you are pregnant or not, this book should be on everyone’s coffee table!

Trust me, that is just the beginning!  Rarely would I read a new parenting book at this stage in my life. Fortunately, this book just “happened” to fall in my lap, forcing me to read the pages, which then caused extreme stomach pains from laughing, and wishing I had done more kegel exercises during my pregnancy… I think I have said enough now.

Let’s Panic About Babies!: How to Endure and Possibly Triumph Over the Adorable Tyrant Who Will Ruin Your Body, Destroy Your Life, Liquefy Your Brain, … Turn You into a Worthwhile Human Being… OFFICIALLY THE BEST PARENTING BOOK EVER!

Best Books For Babies And Toddlers

With the wide array of books available on the shelves, it is difficult to choose the best books for babies and toddlers!

Fortunately, I had a little help picking my Top 5… my daughter’s!  Off course, books like ”Goodnight Moon” and “Moo Baa La La La” are wonderful too!  The 5 books below will stay on my families bookshelf forever though, while others may be donated or given away to other children!  I only received one of the below at my baby shower, leaving me to believe that these may be a great gift for a new mother and her child… just a thought ;)

Jamberry
Out of all the books I have read to my children, this one is my top pick!  I still recite the words, “One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry.”  My girls and I love this book.  We still read it on occasion.  The rhyming is perfect!  The illustrations are beautiful!  If you have not read this book to your children yet, you are missing out!
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: Anniversary Edition of a Modern Classic
One of my all time favorite books for children!  This story is one that parents and children can have a lot of fun with!  Act out the scenes, hunt for bears, sing the words and more!  We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is too great of a book to have sitting on a shelf.  A must read for your little one!
Is Your Mama a Llama?
“Is Your Mama a Llama?”  The best way to describe the book… it’s simply sweet… A young Llama, looking for his Mama and all the lovely animals he meets along the way.  Children learn a little about animals while enjoying a touching story.
Silly Sally (Big Book)
“Silly Sally Went To Town”… she hops, she runs, she naps and more… laugh with your children while reading all the silly things Sally does while heading to town hopping backwards and upside down!  The Rhyming is enough to get your kids to try and read with you!  This book is filled with giggles!
The Rainbow Fish
What child doesn’t love rainbows?  In this book, children learn a lesson about inner beauty vs. outer beauty through a very simple story.  I read this for the first time when my eldest was 5.  It is definitely a book I wish we shared much earlier!

Best Parenting Books!

Whether you are a new parent, a seasoned parent, a DAD, or simply a baby, these books will give you a good laugh for sure!

Below is my list of the BEST OF THE BEST in parenting books I have found!  If only I knew about these books before I had my children… Oh, the stress I may not have had to deal with…

The absolute best of the best parenting books ever… well, that is if you want the reality of parenting… and if you want to not only scare a new parent to be but also make everyone laugh at a baby shower  :)

There is NO such thing as “perfect parenting!” There is NO such thing as a “perfect parent.”  Rather than dwell on what you are not doing “perfectly,” enjoy what you have in front of you… a beautiful little baby that is ALL YOURS… Oh, and for those of you that think you should voice all your opinions to new parents, (“Mom, this is not directed at you… well, not completely at least”)… I learned something a long time ago that hit home for me when I had my first child… Don’t parent the parent!  And then, there is always the ultimate in board books for baby!  Seriously now… I have no words…
