The cookie caper

Talia: “Mom, how many cookies did you say I could eat if I finished my green beans?”
Mom: “2, and remember, I have a video camera watching.”
Talia: “Julia, should I tell her the truth?”
Julia: “NOOO Talia! Don’t do it! You’ll be sorry (pronounced sowwweee)! Trust Me!”
Talia: “Ok Mom… Don’t be mad but I kind of already had four but I am going to finish my green beans now! I promise!”
Julia: “Talia, do you think I should tell her what I did?”
Talia: “No Julia, she probably already knows and you are probably already in trouble.”
Julia: “Yeah, you’re right. Thanks Talia.”
Mom’s thoughts… so close… yet, an epic backfire!

Best Books For Babies And Toddlers

With the wide array of books available on the shelves, it is difficult to choose the best books for babies and toddlers!

Fortunately, I had a little help picking my Top 5… my daughter’s!  Off course, books like ”Goodnight Moon” and “Moo Baa La La La” are wonderful too!  The 5 books below will stay on my families bookshelf forever though, while others may be donated or given away to other children!  I only received one of the below at my baby shower, leaving me to believe that these may be a great gift for a new mother and her child… just a thought ;)

Jamberry
Out of all the books I have read to my children, this one is my top pick!  I still recite the words, “One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry.”  My girls and I love this book.  We still read it on occasion.  The rhyming is perfect!  The illustrations are beautiful!  If you have not read this book to your children yet, you are missing out!
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt: Anniversary Edition of a Modern Classic
One of my all time favorite books for children!  This story is one that parents and children can have a lot of fun with!  Act out the scenes, hunt for bears, sing the words and more!  We’re Going On A Bear Hunt is too great of a book to have sitting on a shelf.  A must read for your little one!
Is Your Mama a Llama?
“Is Your Mama a Llama?”  The best way to describe the book… it’s simply sweet… A young Llama, looking for his Mama and all the lovely animals he meets along the way.  Children learn a little about animals while enjoying a touching story.
Silly Sally (Big Book)
“Silly Sally Went To Town”… she hops, she runs, she naps and more… laugh with your children while reading all the silly things Sally does while heading to town hopping backwards and upside down!  The Rhyming is enough to get your kids to try and read with you!  This book is filled with giggles!
The Rainbow Fish
What child doesn’t love rainbows?  In this book, children learn a lesson about inner beauty vs. outer beauty through a very simple story.  I read this for the first time when my eldest was 5.  It is definitely a book I wish we shared much earlier!

Today’s Flummery – The Walk

Today’s Flummery… It’s all about “The Walk”

The Pre-Pre-Scene Driving to work… windows down… good tunes blasting in my car… bad tunes screeching out of my mouth…

The Pre-Scene My work parking lot… Full.  The side parking lot at my work… Full.  The parking lot behind my work… just annoying.  The way back parking lot that I cannot stand parking in… open spot.  I pulled in.

The Scene…”The Walk” With “The Mean Guy”

As I got out of my car, all seemed well until I realized that I had taken some major strides, but had to turn back… I forgot my cell phone… again.  Still in good spirits, I quickly spun around and started walking towards my car.  Much to my dismay, out of nowhere, came a black jeep, a mean guy in the front seat and a very scary sound!  The wheels of the jeep screeched and stopped just feet from me!  Nearly wetting my pants, I scowled at ”The Mean Guy” and kept on walking towards my car.

Shedding the anxiety caused by “The Mean Guy” and his jeep, I finally had my cell phone in hand.  I began my torturous (max 500 yards) walk to work.  From behind me, I could hear feet… then I felt a presence.  Well, thank goodness I didn’t stop in my tracks because “The Mean Guy” would have darn slammed right into me.  This time, with himself rather than his tank of a vehicle.  He had already tried to run me over in the parking lot.  Now, he was trying to run me over on foot???  Finally, he took a quick left and I just kept going on my long and torturous walk to work.  Seconds later, I was in my office.  Thinking back, I should have stopped short, turned around and clotheslined the guy.  Hope you enjoyed today’s Flummery.  Stay tuned for more tomorrow.  Clearly, I will have more meaningless things to write about.

The Forgotten Anniversary… No Big Deal?

Gaiam.com, Inc

A Forgotten Anniversary… Is it really that big of a deal?

The Scene:  4:40 PM, third floor office – large windows – just yards away from yet another brick building… fortunately, my office windows still allow a bit of light to filter in… And every so often, men working on the roof of the building next to my office can be seen through my computer screen scaring the absolute crap out of me every time.

As I sat on my new ergonomic chair (which I cannot stand), I heard a buzz… my cell phone.  It was a text message from my mother-in-law.  It read “Happy Anniversary.  Hope you have some fun plans!”  What?  Happy what?  Quickly, I glanced at my outlook calendar and right in front of me, highlighted on my computer, was todays date… the 28th.  Yup, June 28th, 2012… My 9th anniversary.  You know, the one I forgot about that my husband actually reminded me about a few days ago which I forgot about again… CRAP!

The first reaction:  CRAP!

The reaction that came right after the first reaction:  Crap, and a little chuckle…

The next reaction:  Walking out of my office, and laughing as I proceeded to tell my friends how I remembered about my anniversary…

Reaction after that next reaction:  I received a text from my husband, who still had not mentioned our anniversary, and responded with a simple, btw… happy anniversary.  Oddly enough, he said the same back with no real emotion behind it (then again, we are talking texting here)… Regardless, it seemed like it he didn’t think anything was strange about neither of us wishing one another in the morning when we first woke, or before lunch when we spoke yet again, or later that afternoon when we talked yet again… you get it…

The last reaction occurred this evening… It finally hit me… We forgot our anniversary!  Really?  Anniversary type occasions mean the world to me!  Well, they do when it comes to my husband and I… I had to put in that disclaimer simply because I have forgotten many anniversaries in my lifetime but they did not belong to me.  Today was a very special day in our life.  We wed, we exchanged rings, we had a piece of paper which proclaimed our love for one another, we partied our little booties off, got really tipsy with friends and family, hugged more people than we could count, felt like we were on top of the world and then passed out cold.  Our ANNIVERSARY!  This last reaction… tears!  How could we forget our anniversary???  Marriage, new beginnings… special moments that are supposed to be remembered forever… Who forgets their own anniversary???  I do… and so does my husband… Fortunately, we will never forget the year we forgot our anniversary… :)

Switching Things Up

My two daughters may look like one another but, they could not be more different.  Talia, my oldest, is always doing exactly what she is supposed to.  She is a great listener and is always ready to please.  Julia, my youngest, on the other hand, has a mind of her own.  She does things as she pleases and comes across quite lazy.  Julia is always trying to find a way to get Talia to do her dirty work.  Talia, with much complaining, usually succumbs to Julia’s orders.  Not sure if they are trying to mess with me or just changing, but, they have mixed things up a bit, thus, making me realize that I may not know my children as well as I thought I did.

Two very strange things happened this weekend in the Cotter household.  First…  I noticed my lovely Talia.  She recently had a hair cut.  Her hair looked great.  Saturday, I gave my angel baby a bath.  Wouldn’t you know it, as I was brushing her hair, I noticed something just a bit out of sorts.  She had bangs.  She has not had bangs in 3 years.  So, the question was, where did they come from.  At first, I thought maybe she was growing new hair and I didn’t realize it.  Then, I came back to reality and realized they were clearly cut.  My next thought was that my mother cut bangs and told Talia not to tell me.  I asked Talia if her grandmother did that to her and she responded with a stern no!  I prodded and prodded, trying to get her to rat out my mom and she continued to tell me that she was not the culprit.  So, I asked again… “Talia, what happened to your bangs?”  She caved.  ”Mom,” she said, “I cut them.”  I couldn’t believe it!  I asked her why and her response was even more amusing.  ”Well,” she said, “remember that chewy gooey yummy rainbow treat you gave me?  Well, it was really gooey and it got stuck in my hair, so I cut it out.”  Well, the chewy gooey thing she was referring to was her first fruit roll up.  I asked Talia to please never ever cut her own hair again.  She agreed that she never would.  As I checked out her bangs, I realized that she actually did quite a good job.  I could not help but compliment her by saying, “even though mommy never wants you to do that again, you did a pretty good job.”  Talia’s response… “Obviously mom, I was looking in the mirror and being really careful.”

Now to Julia.  Julia, my daughter who refuses to lift a finger in the house.  She pretends to clean while she secretly plays.   She complains every time you ask her to do anything.  Her typical response, “uh, I always have to do everything for everyone!”  Unbelievable as she rarely does anything for anyone, including herself.  This weekend was a little different.  I asked the girls to pick up their room.  To my amazement, Julia was moving around like a kid in fast motion.  My little peanut might as well have had roller skates on as she cruised through her bedroom and even the rest of the house cleaning away.  She even put a pretty dress on her play table and decorated it…  I commended her and told her how proud I was that she was working so hard.  Julia’s response, “thanks mom!  I decided to start being good.”  Enough said.

Afraid Of A Moth?

Listen to a bestseller for $7.49 at audible.com!

Right on schedule, the moment Danny and I had a second to relax and plant our behinds on our couches, our bulldog, Cooper started scratching at the door to go out. It was Danny’s turn. On their way back in, they were followed by the most disgusting creature I have ever seen. A moth! Yes, I am petrified of moths.

Of course, as I witness the nasty little being come in behind the two of them, I screamed…and screamed…and screamed! As Danny was trying to swat the thing, the unthinkable happened. I continued to scream…and scream…and scream. Wouldn’t you know it, the moth came darting at my forehead, and I simply watched it – screaming the whole time. As soon as my eyes were cross-eyed from staring at the thing, it smacked me on my forehead and kept on flying. My recollection of exact events from this point on is not so great. I believe I may have been convulsing. Either that, or the furry creature partially knocked me out. Regardless, I remember Danny stating he did in fact swat the moth and he believed it was dead.

Finally able to breathe, I calmed down and started reading. About an hour later, Rocky, my Chihuahua needed to go out. Danny took potty duty once again. This time though, he did not bring a moth into the house. Oh no, he didn’t need to. Somehow, the awful creature who caused my concussion the first time sprung back to life. Oh yes! He was alive and well. Again, he started circling my living room fast and furious. Again, I screamed! Only this time, I buried my head under a pillow and continued to scream. Slowly though, the screams were turning into tears. While under the pillow, I heard Danny run into the house. Clearly he saw the moth. I could hear him shuffling through the living room. All of a sudden, he yelled, “got it”! Sigh. I popped my head out from under the pillow. “Where is it…where is it?” I asked as Cooper was licking my face, worried about me. “I smacked it dead to the ground and then Cooper ate it,” Danny said. Fantastic…
