Books For Children And Social Awareness

Societal pressures affect people of all ages in one way or another.  As a child, I was not only affected by the pressures of society, I succumbed to them in many ways.  Dealing with bullies, having low self-esteem, and wanting desperately to fit in were things I was faced with daily.  Fortunately, I was able to get past much of this but, will never forget what the pain felt like.  Rather than dwell on the negatives, which don’t benefit anyone, I prefer to use what I went through to educate others and pray each day that my girls don’t ever have to be faced with the same kind of pain.

It took me almost 30 years to finally speak out about the bullying I experienced.  Through this, a few things happened.  First, I was interviewed by Care2 about my childhood and was featured on their activist profile page which reached mass amounts of viewers. Second, I was able to work with an amazing organization called uknow.com, who have developed a sophisticated parental intelligence software which helps us, as parents, change the way we parent since our children have changed the way they socialize. Makes sense right?  The third reason is the main reason for this article.  Through writing, and others reading what I have written, I was very fortunate to connect with another blogger with a fantastic website called S.O.S. Mom.  Melissa (aka S.O.S Mom) recently contacted me about an amazing giveaway she is currently doing.  She thought that I would be interested since the books she chose to promote are about bullying.

Hearing what Melissa had to say and learning more about the books, it only seemed obvious that we both needed to collaborate!  Melissa, being one of the first bloggers I met in the blogosphere was easy for me to connect with.  Reading her blog gave me a bit of insight on her… she is real.  Her blog offers a ton of great giveaways as well as tips for a variety of things!  My favorite giveaway though, is definitely near and dear to my heart.  Her giveaway features the Howard B. Wigglebottom series books.  Howard B. Wigglebottom: Learns About Bullies from the We Do Listen Foundation.  The books are meant to help children with their self-esteem, how to deal with bullying and violence and much more. These are truly a “must have” for our children.  Awareness about bullying has reached a new high!  Educating and talking to our children about bullying promotes awareness as well as helps leave the door open for communicating about bullying.  Please take a moment and check out S.O.S. Mom and participate in this giveaway!

Color Meditation

Spiritual Cinema Circle

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again…
That was my mindset when I began meditating… 5 years ago.
For 5 full years, it never happened! I didn’t give up, nor did I reach that state of consciousness which induced a benefit. I wanted to reach the state of bliss, serenity and clarity successful meditators spoke of.

Then,

I

luckily

stumbled

upon

color

meditation.

Color meditation is focusing on your Chakras during meditation. Our seven chakras start with the root chakra, represented by the color red, and end with the crown chakra, represented by the color violet/brilliant white. The chakras run down the center of your body and control your energy flow. Each of our seven main chakra centers, are connected to us being on different levels from physical and emotional, to spiritual, and more. Chakras have been linked to healing, finding alignment and balance in our lives as well as our creation.

I started by focusing on the colors two at a time. I read about each color and each chakra and how to open and close each during meditation. During my practice, that is exactly what I did. Each day, I incorporated 2 additional chakras. Finally, my practice went from one color to the next, eventually reaching my crown chakra. Once I closed my crown Chakra, I continued to meditate. Being so consumed with each color and Chakra, I was focused and relaxed. My mind was not wandering and it happened! True meditation! I can genuinely say that I was not sure if it was possible…
Once finished meditating, I felt a sense of calm. I was relaxed and felt refreshed. In the five years I have been practicing meditation, I never thought it would feel like that. I am not sure if I was expecting more or less, but I am sure that it felt great. Whether I reach this point over and over again or not, I can say that every time I have meditated, I have felt good. We all need to let our mind relax just like our bodies. Sometimes, it just take a bit of practice.

Check out the link I found which helped me to reach my goal.

War On Women

I have never been one to worry too much about women’s rights but this is getting out of hand.  Rather than me express my opinions, I would rather you take a moment and read through a few of the sites listed below.  If you feel strongly against what the Republican party is trying to do, take one moment and sign the petition below.

Celiac Disease, PETA And A Kardashian… Awareness

Rarely have I written about celebrities.  Regardless of whether I like Kim Kardashian or not, when I initially heard about her “flour encounter” on the Red Carpet, two conflicting emotions ran through me.  First, I wanted to chuckle and then, I felt a little sad for Ms. Kardashian.  The world’s obsession with celebrities amazes me.  I realize they are in the press consistently, therefore, the public actually “feels” like they know them based on what is written and mentioned in the news.  Articles written, unfortunately, remind me of a real life version of the game telephone, which, I never liked in the first place.  As more articles are written about the most recent sighting or gossip, the information somehow gets more detailed as additional content is added.

Yahoo had an article written today with the headline “Khloe Kardashian Quits PETA After Sister Kim’s Flour Bombing.”  The mention of PETA sparked my interest so I read on.  Towards the end of the article, Kim was quoted and said “I think, ‘What if that was some other substance? What if that person had a dangerous weapon?’ It’s scary, and what’s even scarier is this woman acted as if she was a part of the press. She just came out of nowhere! And so we are definitely changing things up a little bit, amping up security, taking some measures.”  The first thing that came to mind when I read ‘What if that was some other substance’, was Celiac disease.  The substance was flour.  A substance that, if not gluten-free, could cause an awful reaction to anyone with Celiac disease!

A few years ago, a close friend of mine informed me her daughter had been diagnosed with Celiac disease.  This was the first I had heard of the condition.  My recollection of what my friend’s daughter went through prior to being diagnosed was horrific!  To watch your child in a hospital bed, deteriorating in front of your own eyes, and having no idea why, is terrifying for any parent.  Fortunately, she was diagnosed with Celiac, but, this meant life for her would change forever.  Her new life would involve following a gluten-free diet to heal her intestines and prevent further damage.  According to an article written in PubMed Health, the healing often occurs in 3-6 months for children, but may take 2-3 years in adults.  That is simply the healing process.  Unfortunately, whenever a person is contaminated (which could happen by breathing gluten), the recovery begins again.  As of right now, Kim Kardashian has not pressed charges against the woman who threw the flour.  It saddens me to think that someone affiliated with an organization like PETA, claiming to be a humanitarian, did not have any regard for other people who may have been in the area her infamous flour bomb went off.

Please don’t forget to vote for me!  You can vote every day, once a day, until April 10th!  I really need your votes and it takes only just a moment!
