Celiac Disease, PETA And A Kardashian… Awareness

Rarely have I written about celebrities.  Regardless of whether I like Kim Kardashian or not, when I initially heard about her “flour encounter” on the Red Carpet, two conflicting emotions ran through me.  First, I wanted to chuckle and then, I felt a little sad for Ms. Kardashian.  The world’s obsession with celebrities amazes me.  I realize they are in the press consistently, therefore, the public actually “feels” like they know them based on what is written and mentioned in the news.  Articles written, unfortunately, remind me of a real life version of the game telephone, which, I never liked in the first place.  As more articles are written about the most recent sighting or gossip, the information somehow gets more detailed as additional content is added.

Yahoo had an article written today with the headline “Khloe Kardashian Quits PETA After Sister Kim’s Flour Bombing.”  The mention of PETA sparked my interest so I read on.  Towards the end of the article, Kim was quoted and said “I think, ‘What if that was some other substance? What if that person had a dangerous weapon?’ It’s scary, and what’s even scarier is this woman acted as if she was a part of the press. She just came out of nowhere! And so we are definitely changing things up a little bit, amping up security, taking some measures.”  The first thing that came to mind when I read ‘What if that was some other substance’, was Celiac disease.  The substance was flour.  A substance that, if not gluten-free, could cause an awful reaction to anyone with Celiac disease!

A few years ago, a close friend of mine informed me her daughter had been diagnosed with Celiac disease.  This was the first I had heard of the condition.  My recollection of what my friend’s daughter went through prior to being diagnosed was horrific!  To watch your child in a hospital bed, deteriorating in front of your own eyes, and having no idea why, is terrifying for any parent.  Fortunately, she was diagnosed with Celiac, but, this meant life for her would change forever.  Her new life would involve following a gluten-free diet to heal her intestines and prevent further damage.  According to an article written in PubMed Health, the healing often occurs in 3-6 months for children, but may take 2-3 years in adults.  That is simply the healing process.  Unfortunately, whenever a person is contaminated (which could happen by breathing gluten), the recovery begins again.  As of right now, Kim Kardashian has not pressed charges against the woman who threw the flour.  It saddens me to think that someone affiliated with an organization like PETA, claiming to be a humanitarian, did not have any regard for other people who may have been in the area her infamous flour bomb went off.

Please don’t forget to vote for me!  You can vote every day, once a day, until April 10th!  I really need your votes and it takes only just a moment!

Parenting, A Job Without Pay?

Parenting is not a job.  If it were a job, we would have managers telling us exactly what to do (no, not our mothers and fathers), and we would have a manual.  These things do not exist.  What we do have are little beings with their own unique traits, that we, as parents, have been given the rights to help shape and mold but not sculpt and dry.

With the influx of baby books and other ideas on how we should raise these unique beings, it is a wonder that any of us gets it right.  I read almost every single one.  The other day, I was cleaning out a closet and found over 20 books which I had read through my pregnancies on how to raise a happy baby, healthy baby and everything I was supposed to do during my pregnancy.  Out of the mass amounts of books, I remembered one.  The book, “Secrets Of The Baby Whisperer”.  Why that book?  It was the only book that taught me how to listen to my baby and not what is supposedly text-book… There is no such thing as a “textbook” baby.  It is probably one of the few comments made in books that make me want to throw the book away.  My child may have a number of traits similar to a “type cast” per say, but, my child is clearly not text-book.

The teachings (or should I say the way things were communicated to me) in “Secrets Of The Baby Whisperer,” taught me to treat my daughters from birth, as if they were little people.  I introduced them to our home, our dog, and everything else like they would have been as adults.  I realize this sounds funny but it worked.  I respected them from birth and now they demand the same respect.  I cannot talk to them as if they don’t understand what I am saying.  They do.  Sometimes, this can be tough but overall, the results have been positive.  I could go on forever how this book helped me with my daughters, their colic, and how it helped me with their learning and growth but I would rather leave you with wondering more about the book and buying it for yourself or for the next person you know, who is about to embark on the most rewarding career in their lifetime, becoming a mom or dad.

Etsy, Pinterest, What Next?

If I could have any job in the world, I would like to be a buyer for Etsy.  I understand this job doesn’t exist.  Being a shopaholic, I don’t know how many hours I have spent on my iPad cruising through the Etsy website.  Is there anything they don’t sell?

Lover of all things antique, shabby chic, and just plain unique looking, Etsy is the place for me. What amazes me is the amount of creative and talented people who are selling through the website. Everyday, I come across another artist I love.  I did not even realize until last evening that I could pin anything that I want through Etsy as well.  Be very afraid of my Pinterest boards in the next few days…  They are sure to fill up with fantastic goods! Fortunately, for you, I am going to name my new board “The Etsy Pin Ups”… pure genius (not referring to myself).  Etsy and Pinterest have made it easier for me to take pride in the fact that I have a good eye, and not dwell on my lack of creativity for the things I wish I could do.  An example would be my not so fantastic knitting skills.  Instead of losing stitches, like most people, I gain them in mass quantities from row to row.  Again… thanks to the amazing talent on Etsy!  I can now buy homemade knits instead of trying to make them myself.

Music Sets All Stages

IN SEARCH OF THE DAYS WHERE MUSIC LEGENDS WERE MADE… IN SEARCH OF THE NEXT ARTIST WHO WILL MAKE ME WANT TO MAKE THEIR STAGE MINE… MUSIC SETS ALL STAGES… WHAT STAGE ARE YOU ON TODAY…

[amazon asin=B001BBH6OU&text=www.amazon.co.us&template=mp3 clips&chan=default]THE STAGE – JAZZY WITH SOUL, BEAUTIFUL VOICES AND LYRICS THAT ROCK…

AMAZING… A bold statement on my part but true. The playlist described in this post is a compilation of women who know how to set the tune. Think of yourself, morning, noon or night… this playlist can accompany almost any mood.

First off, in the morning with a cup of tea, kids sitting at the table, puppies basking in the sun and you simply enjoying the morning air… Starting with a little Carla Bruni, whether in French or English she has a soothing and intoxicating voice. She is a nice start because her music eases you into a trance like mode. Just comfortable, peaceful and soft with a cool vibe. I love the guitar and lack of too many noticeable instruments in her recordings. The next to throw into the mix is definitely a little Amy Winehouse. I have to say that I was not a huge fan of her commercialized music. If you actually delve into her past albums and more current songs that were not highly publicized, you will find a voice that will never be forgotten. She is absolutely amazing. Starting off or ending the day with Amy Winehouse makes you want to close your eyes and slowly rock from side to side or grab your partners hands and dance about in the middle of your kitchen or pretty much anywhere. Her renditions of “Our Day Will Come’ and “Will You Still Love Me” are as good if not better than the originals (I generally despise re-makes of original songs).

Generally I like adding some mix into a playlist but the mood I get into when listening to these ladies is tough to let flow into a different mood so I am going to stick with these amazing voices and add Adele next. The one description that comes to mind when I listen to her voice is simply powerful. Her words are perfect. Each song is perfect and I have yet to dislike anything that flows out of her. Some of it may be a bit morbid but it still doesn’t matter. She emphasizes just the right way and her voice is like an oversized punctuation mark. She’s just awesome. Moving from Adele, I have only a few more to add for today. First Christina Perri. When I first heard “Jar Of Hearts” all I could think of was how many of my friends would have loved to hear that just at the apex of a break up. She speaks to not only the pop culture teenager but the 30 something in the middle of their world falling apart. Never mind the fact that her voice is beautiful! ”Bluebird” and “Arms” are another two of her songs you must listen to! She is not only a great artist but her songs are easy to belt out along with her and truthfully, make you feel pretty empowered.

The last artist/song I am going to write about now is Regina Spector. Now, she doesn’t quite fit into this Jazzy mode but I have to mention her. Her song “The Call” was featured in the movie “The Chronicles Of Narnia”. It was played during the closing credits and I ended up buying the album simply because of this song. She brings tears to my eyes and happiness at the same time while listening to her words. It’s like listening to someone about a lost love or the thought of a loved one leaving to go over seas. The hope, love and thought of losing them all at once encompass you. Emotional as it is, the song is incredible and I suggest taking a moment to feeling it for yourself.

Social Networking T.I.P.P.s – The World Of Social Media And Building An Online Presence

SOCIAL NETWORKING T.I.P.P.s

the reality

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BREAK INTO THE WORLD OF SOCIAL NETWORKING, LAUNCH YOUR BRAND, BUILD YOUR PRODUCT LINE OR SIMPLY CONNECT WITH THE WORLD?  WHETHER YOU ARE LOOKING TO MAKE MONEY OR JUST LET PEOPLE KNOW WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOUR CAUSE IS, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT YOU NEED TO DO… THAT IS, IF YOU WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT IT.

THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO NETWORK SOCIALLY, IT IS HARD TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHERE TO START.

FIRST, YOU DO NEED A BUSINESS PLAN.  SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF INITIALLY ARE:

What are you trying to do?

Sounds like a big question right?  IT IS!  If you do not have a business plan, consider yourself dead in the water.  You need an idea, and you need goals.  It doesn’t matter if you want to make money from this idea or not.  What does matter is that you establish some sort of goal and work towards it.

Take into consideration that no matter what type of venture you start, you are going to have days where you feel accomplished and days you may think you are dead in the water or extremely lonely.  If you have a goal, you can track it and now… you don’t feel so dead in the water.  Everything you do, no matter how little or how big, is one step closer to your goal.

REMEMBER, THE WORLD OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND NETWORKING THROUGH THE INTERNET AND AVENUES SIMILAR CAN GET VERY LONELY.  YOU MAY BE TRYING TO BUILD AN ON LINE PRESENCE BUT YOU ARE STILL LOSING TOUCH WITH REAL HUMAN CONTACT.  On so many occasions I have read that I need to find my tribe in order to succeed with Social Networking.  That is absolutely true!  If you think you will be a Social Networking Success without a tribe, you might.  Unfortunately, you may be very lonely in the process and could give up before real seeing real results.  Social Media and Social Networking is similar to sales in the real world.  You need to interact with people, even if it is only through your computer.

FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, SOCIAL NETWORKING IS BRIDGING THE GAP FOR US.  GROWING UP, DIRECT CONTACT WAS THE ONLY WAY WE KNEW HOW TO DO BUSINESS.  TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE COMMUNICATING MUCH EASIER AND LESS TIME CONSUMING FOR SURE.  THE NEGATIVE, IT HAS TAKEN A LOT AWAY FROM THE SEE IT, FEEL IT, TOUCH IT PIECE.  ALTHOUGH I DON’T ALWAYS HAVE AMPLE AMOUNTS OF TIME TO ACTUALLY LUNCH WITH SOMEONE AND TALK BUSINESS, IT I NEVER REGRET IT WHEN I DO.

BY NETWORKING SOCIALLY, YOU ARE NOW TRICKING YOUR MIND TO FEELING CONNECTED IN A WORLD OF WI-FI.  IT MAY SEEM TEDIOUS BUT IT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS.  WE ARE STILL HUMAN PEOPLE!  WE ARE NOT COMPUTERS OR ROBOTS!  WE STILL LIKE CONTACT!  IF NOT, YOU WOULD BE A RECLUSE, NEVER LEAVE YOUR HOUSE AND LIVE ALONE FOREVER!

Now, back to the topic at hand… Try keeping your business plan open to change as well.  Track everything you do and know that you may alter things here and there.  Progress may occur when you least expect it and all of a sudden, the plan takes a slightly different turn or detour.  Embrace it and work with it.  NO business plan should be a steadfast one.

If you are considering making an income from your idea, keep reminding yourself that you need more than one income stream and work towards obtaining a few.  Baby steps is the best advice I can give you.  If you have multiple streams of income working for you and your idea, if one goes south, you still have others helping out.  Can you imagine if amazon sold only physical books.  When the world of e-books came into the picture, Amazon would only have physical books to sell and may have crumbled before the rise of their Kindle and their own e-books.  Amazon was smart, they had different streams of income coming in regardless.  If their Kindle never happened, they would still have a very profitable business.  This may not be a great example but you get the idea.  MULTIPLE STREAMS OF INCOME!

More to come…

The Imperfectly Perfect Parent – Trending Mom T.I.P.P.s

What Is The Imperfectly Perfect Parent You Ask?

It pretty sums up who I am or should I say what some people think of me.  I am not mainstream, I don’t follow all old school values expected of me.  Tired of listening to what everyone else thinks I should be doing for or with my kids, I do what feels right.  Sometimes, my parenting doesn’t fit the mold of everyone around me.  The results are what I want though… happy, healthy, smart, sweet, compassionate and loving little girls with an amazing sense of themselves and what family truly means.

Through the years, I have heard mothers coach their kids on what to say, I don’t.  As long as my girls are polite and know right from wrong, say their pleases and thank you’s, it is more important for me to let them be kids and say what is really on their mind.  Can you imagine being in your 30′s and having someone tell you what to say or not to say all day long?  Not me!

I am also tired of people pretending, yes pretending their lives are perfect, their husbands are perfect, and everything on the exterior is just dandy!  Guess what… It’s NOT!  Everyone knows that so please people, STOP PRETENDING!  You are the joke!  We all have bad days!  We all have our moments!  We are all REAL!  I understand not wanting to divulge everything although I am not one to exercise restraint regarding my life.  The difference is that if you want to judge me for these things, I don’t really want you in my life.  So there, I finally said it like it is.

If you want to be a part of my life and read my blog, be prepared to hear what you may not want to.  You might hear things that upset you, don’t fit your mold, or you may not agree with.  Just do me a favor, stop reading and participating if you feel the need to judge me because the reality is, I am still a good person, love my friends, love my family and love my life.  I just happen to be imperfectly perfect… for me… and my family loves it!

Going Green – Our 30 Day Quest Continued…

Day Sixteen, February 21st
Green Change: Dogs Gone Green

Since my whole family is going green, it only makes sense to incorporate my dogs.  Fortunately, our pet store brand dog food has almost run out.  No better time than now to start incorporating healthy and organic dog food into their diets.  After a visit to Pet Smart, a conversation with a store attendant and a lengthy introduction into the world of organic pet food, I walked out of the store with a smallish bag of certified-organic pet food which meets the strict USDA standards.  This means no hormones, pesticides, antibiotics, and more… hmm… I wonder if the lack of hormones will help Cooper with his hyperactive behavior?  Let’s hope so!

Day Seventeen, February 22nd
Green Change: Dryer Ducts Need Cleaning?

I once read that you should clean dryer ducts on occasion.  Although, I never thought to do this before, I figured why not?  Just to make sure that I was not dreaming when I read this, I chose to rely on Google and look it up.  To my surprise, a ton of articles popped up on my computer screen addressing dryer ducts and the need to clean them!  Proud I remembered this, I decided to read on a bit.  Did you know cleaning a dryer duct poses less of a chance for a fire hazard?  Definitely something I am not prepared to deal with.  Besides that, small and large loads may take longer to dry if the ducts are not clean.  Although these things seem pretty obvious, cleaning our dryer ducts are not exactly on the top of my daily to do list.  Fortunately, they still are not since my DH took care of it for me.  Positive – they are clean!

Don’t forget to take a look at my Trending Green page!  Check out how far our family has come… each day is getting a little harder but more rewarding at the same time!
