Children And Facebook – What Parent’s Need To Know

Parents/Guardians: What You Need To Know About Your Child’s First Facebook Account.

Facebook is a semi-private platform used as a way to communicate and share personal information with other users.  There are many risks associated with sharing information through Facebook.  Below are a list of things that all parents need to know about their child’s Facebook accounts.  Between cyberbullying and other internet hazards social media sites pose, being educated about social media could prevent a potential bad situation from happening to your own child.

  • Below is just some of the personal data users have the ability to post and share on Facebook:
    • Their Full Name
    • Their Phone Number(s)
    • Home Town And State
    • City/State Where You Currently Live
    • Current And Previous School Information As Well As Addresses
    • Curriculum Studied
    • Current And Previous Employment Information
    • Groups/Organizations You Are Associated With
    • Interests
    • Relationship Status And Whether You Are Interested In Meeting New People, Interested In Men/Women And More.
    • Family Members On Facebook
    • Your Birthday And Age
    • Photos And Videos
    • Status Updates
    • There Is Even A Section On Your Profile Page Called Personal.  These Are Empty Fields Where A User Can Enter Anything They Want.
  • Privacy Settings
    • Facebook does in fact offer various privacy settings for users.  Unfortunately, it is very difficult to keep up with the frequent changes Facebook makes to their privacy settings and adjust individual user settings according to each change.
    • Privacy settings should be set to “only my friends,” or “no one.”
  • Photos
    • Facebook creates a digital link between your name and your photo.  What this means for the user:
      • Your photo can be accessed through the Internet by entering your name in a search engine.
      • Entering your name in a search engine may show your profile picture.
      • If a user decides to click on your picture, they could access more personal information about you.
    • Users have the option to set their account to public or private, limiting the number of users that can view their albums and pictures.  Unfortunately, users do not have the ability to “opt out” of their profile picture being publicly accessible.
      • The only way to prevent your profile picture from being public is by never uploading a profile picture.
    • Tagging Pictures – Users may “tag” pictures of another user, which associates the “tagged” users name with the picture.  What this means for the user:
      • Once a picture is tagged, it is displayed on the ”tagged” user’s profile wall.
      • Facebook users do have the opportunity to approve all “tagged” pictures prior to the picture being displayed on their wall.  If the user does not approve the “tagged” picture, it will not be displayed on their wall.  The user that posted the picture can still post it on their wall but the “tagged” user’s name will not be visible.
  • Facebook Messaging System – Facebook has a messaging system that combines texting, instant messaging and email into a streamlined method of communication.  Whether a user prefers one or the other, they are able to communicate however they please.
  • The “Facebook Timeline” – Profile pages offer a “Facebook Timeline” which allows viewers to know your current whereabouts as well as a timeline of past events.  It creates an on line journal of your life for other Facebook users.
  • Games And Applications– Facebook gives users the ability to participate in virtual games and add applications to their profiles.  Through participation, the user’s visibility increases, and personal information is not only shared with strangers but interaction is possible as well.
    • The dangers of some Apps:
      • Regardless of whether you press the “Like” or “Share” button, some Apps will allow viewers to see articles you read on line, concert or other event tickets you purchase and more.
    • Numerous Facebook Applications have also been found to be a hoax.   Some of these Applications, when downloaded, have given hackers access to the user profiles and personal information.  A few have even been able to forward messages to additional friends, in turn giving the hacker access to multiple user profiles.
  • Events – Facebook allows users to create an event, whether it is a celebration or a simple get together.  The organizer can invite any of their Facebook friends or make the event public.  By accepting the invitation, this too will appear on your profile page for others to view.

The list of potential hazards are long.  If your child wants a Facebook account, it is important to educate them and make sure that you friend them as well.  Children who have parents as friends on Facebook are less likely to socially network the wrong way.  The key is to keep the lines of communication open with your child.

Wine – Red Glass At Night = Mommas Delight, Red Glass In The Morning = Mommas Warning

Bottle Of Red… “A Red Glass At Night Is A Momma’s Delight… A Red Glass In The Morning Is A Momma’s Warning”… (yes, I do think I am quite savvy for making that one up… And yes, totally putting it in quotes to give myself props)…

Recently, I saw a new doctor and was grilled, on paper.  One of the questions asked on my 4 page questionnaire – Do you drink alcohol?  My answer – Yes. The next question… If yes, how much alcohol do you drink… you get the gist.

Obviously, these questions are on the questionnaire because doctors need to know if you have an alcohol problem or not.  It could have to do with the type of medication they may have to prescribe for you at some point… or something else… If everyone gets the same questionnaire, and has to answer the same questions, why do I feel so strange having to answer it?

I don’t like the question because many factors go into my response… Are they talking about this week or last week.  Do they mean what I drank last night, or what I plan on drinking tonight due to the anxiety and stress the question caused?  Is it a way to make me feel guilty about having a cocktail or two? Yikes… I really don’t like that question!

My reality… last week, I may have had one to two glasses of

red wine

3 nights in a row.  Since then, I may not have had any red wine. Tonight, I might have a few friends over and drink three to four glasses.  Does that mean that I am an alcoholic???  Absolutely NOT!  I have gone months without a drink, nor wanting one. Other times, I have taken a sip of red wine and almost hurled because at that very moment, I couldn’t stand the taste.  So now, I need to question the question and question my response… Personally, I don’t think it is a fair question… regardless of my answer, I somehow, am forced to feel guilty for something I am not doing wrong… Kind of like in the first grade when I dropped our guinea pig Snowball, because she nipped me and I got yelled at… The little monster drew blood for no reason… again, I did nothing wrong.

Wildlife In Suburbia And Some Strange People

Buy Gift Cards That Never ExpireA Quiet Life In Suburbia Turned Upside Down In Less Than 12 Hours…

It was dark… very, very dark… Danny and Cooper left for a walk… as they strolled down the driveway, they saw two spooky looking eyes staring at them.  Within seconds, the eyes were overshadowed by the screaming they heard coming from the creature in front of them.  Petrified, the two froze for a moment, then turned and sprinted back up the driveway.  6 legs, moving as fast as they could!  My tough looking husband and really tough looking bulldog, finally made it into our home.  Breathing heavily and emotionally scarred the two of them could barely use their vocal chords.  I asked what was wrong.  Danny replied, “A fox!  You Didn’t Hear that???”  “No,” I said.  He continued to tell me how scary it was, and how it basically attacked them with the awful scream.  I could tell he felt violated.

This morning… Danny had taken Talia to breakfast with dad morning at her school, leaving Julia and I home with the dogs.  As I was getting ready for work, both dogs began  barking in an aggressive manner.  I looked out the window to see what all the fuss was about.  There it was… right in front of me, showing no fear… a fox!  It was staring right at me and not moving an inch.  Our eyes locked, thus beginning the stare down.  Thanks to the “Stare Master” My Little Pony episode I watched with the girls, Moments into the stare down, both dogs were still barking but running from the front window to the back door slider.  The dogs were such a big distraction that I had no choice but to put up my white flag.  The fox won this time… I turned to see what the dogs were barking at in our backyard and noticed yet another fox.  My house was surrounded and I was being kept hostage.  Fortunately, they dispersed soon after, Danny came home and I was able to leave for work.  As I drove down my street, in front of my very own eyes was another fox!  The fox was not only in the middle of the street, it was carrying an animal in its mouth.  Disgusted, I quickly drove off.  Thinking it was time to call our Animal Control officer regarding the “fox issue” we were having, I pulled up in front of our local library.

While at the stop sign in front of the library, a large sign caught my eye… The large black lettering was hard to ignore… JUNE 7th, 7PM COYOTE AWARENESS MEETING AT THE LIBRARY!  Great, never mind the fox, now I have to deal with Coyotes.  Maybe they could have a FOX AWARENESS MEETING as well.  Unfortunately, I saw the sign a bit too late as June 7th has passed.  Driving along, I neared our towns Police Station and Dunkin Donuts.  In front of the Dunkin Donuts (directly across from the Police Station and on a main road), I saw a large table and two men standing behind it.  They were on the sidewalk and had signs and posters hanging from the table.  Being a bit nosy, I slowed down… Yes, I was one of “those” people today.  You know, the ones that slow down because they are nosy stopping traffic everywhere for no good reason.  Anyhow, what I saw was overwhelming.  The posters were of our very own President Obama.  His face had been altered on them though.  They had moustaches on them, similar to the German leader I don’t like mentioning the name of.  The men were verbal about world peace and stopping the war… I have no more words.

Facebook, Kids Under 13 And Parental Intelligence Software

I previously wrote in an article about Keeping your kids safe from cyber bullies and other problematic situations regarding social media and other new technology. Technology has changed the way our children socialize today. It is only logical to change the way we parent as well. Facebook’s latest idea, targeting children under the age of 13, is exactly why parents need to take matters into there own hands, and protect their children.

Uknowkids.com is helping parents do just that. The Uknowkids team developed the first parental intelligence software. The system allows parents to connect with their child’s digital world without being invasive. With cyberbullying being more prevalent than ever, and child predators using the internet while targeting children, this is a must have for all parents.

Fortunately, I have been able to connect with Uknowkids and see first hand what their software is capable of. Besides the software though, their website offers useful tools and information that are a “must see” for all parents. During recent visit to their website, I found a moving snippet I had to share with my readers. Here are some statistics regarding Facebook and the social sites newest potential venture

Facebook Allowing Children 12 And Under?

Reading recent headlines regarding Facebook just about made me regurgitate twice in my own mouth.  As sick as that may sound, I don’t believe it is as sick as the headlines were.  As I skimmed through a few articles about Facebook and their wild and crazy idea allowing children 12 and under to use their site, I wanted to do nothing more than scream.  As if our children have nothing better to do than spend their youth on social networking sites like Facebook.

Between child predators, cyber-bullies, social pressures and more, why would Facebook even think this is a good idea for our youth?  This past May, Consumer Reports published the below in an article regarding a study they did:

“Children under 13 aren’t supposed to use Facebook. We project from our survey that the company closed about 800,000 such accounts in the last year.

But some 5.6 million underage kids still have accounts, our survey suggests. And 800,000 minors were harassed or subjected to other forms of cyberbullying on Facebook.

Our survey also shows that most parents who knew their preteen used Facebook had not discussed online threats with them or “friended” them, while up to a third did nothing to keep up with their children’s Facebook activities”

Targets: 11- to 13-year-olds. The least vigilant parents in our survey were those with children under 13 on Facebook. “The kids most often targeted are 11- to 13-year-olds, because they’re more naive and less likely to tell an adult about it,” says Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office. Its Child Predator Unit recently charged William Ainsworth, 53, with using phony Facebook identities to lure hundreds of girls as young as 11, whose profiles revealed that they were vulnerable because of trouble at home or school. Ainsworth allegedly solicited nude photos from some and arranged to meet for sex. He has pleaded not guilty.

Investigators interviewed more than 30 girls; almost all said they were using Facebook with little or no parental knowledge when they communicated with the predator. Most used cell phones or other mobile devices, making supervision difficult.”

The above study alone is good enough for me to realize that allowing children under age 13 to use Facebook is a very bad idea!  It’s dangerous just like many other social networking sites.  Adults need to use sites like these with caution, never mind a minor who may not fully understand the risks associated with it.  As adults, we understand that one needs to use discretion when announcing certain things on Facebook.  Examples include leaving for vacation and letting the whole world know your house will be vacant.  Something as simple as announcing the date of your wedding and where you plan to honeymoon or pictures you post while on your honeymoon can lead to a break in.

Food for thought:  According to an article published on Parents.com, “based on the identity of the perpetrator, there are three distinct types of kidnapping: kidnapping by a relative of the victim or “family kidnapping” (49 percent), kidnapping by an acquaintance of the victim or “acquaintance kidnapping” (27 percent), and kidnapping by a stranger to the victim or “stranger kidnapping” (24 percent).”  That said, the majority of abductions that occur are by a relative or acquaintance.  Well now, your 9-year-old son or daughter is on Facebook.  You, as the parent decide on who they should or should not friend on Facebook.  Your child’s aunt, uncle, maybe a close friend or neighbor wants to friend them and you allow it.  Now, your child and a friend head out to the movies with one another.  They post it on Facebook, or better yet, your child’s friend posts it on Facebook because you don’t allow your child to post where they are going.  Unfortunately, their friend decides to “tag” them on their Facebook profile…  Enough said.

If by chance, Mark Zuckerberg did in fact “hint” about opening the social network to minors, as noted in an msnbc article written by Helen A.S. Popkin, he should be ashamed of himself and think about the potential consequences.  Either that, or he is still far to young and naive to understand what the repercussions could be.  He may need some social monitoring on his profile as well…again… just food for thought…

Books For Children And Social Awareness

Societal pressures affect people of all ages in one way or another.  As a child, I was not only affected by the pressures of society, I succumbed to them in many ways.  Dealing with bullies, having low self-esteem, and wanting desperately to fit in were things I was faced with daily.  Fortunately, I was able to get past much of this but, will never forget what the pain felt like.  Rather than dwell on the negatives, which don’t benefit anyone, I prefer to use what I went through to educate others and pray each day that my girls don’t ever have to be faced with the same kind of pain.

It took me almost 30 years to finally speak out about the bullying I experienced.  Through this, a few things happened.  First, I was interviewed by Care2 about my childhood and was featured on their activist profile page which reached mass amounts of viewers. Second, I was able to work with an amazing organization called uknow.com, who have developed a sophisticated parental intelligence software which helps us, as parents, change the way we parent since our children have changed the way they socialize. Makes sense right?  The third reason is the main reason for this article.  Through writing, and others reading what I have written, I was very fortunate to connect with another blogger with a fantastic website called S.O.S. Mom.  Melissa (aka S.O.S Mom) recently contacted me about an amazing giveaway she is currently doing.  She thought that I would be interested since the books she chose to promote are about bullying.

Hearing what Melissa had to say and learning more about the books, it only seemed obvious that we both needed to collaborate!  Melissa, being one of the first bloggers I met in the blogosphere was easy for me to connect with.  Reading her blog gave me a bit of insight on her… she is real.  Her blog offers a ton of great giveaways as well as tips for a variety of things!  My favorite giveaway though, is definitely near and dear to my heart.  Her giveaway features the Howard B. Wigglebottom series books.  Howard B. Wigglebottom: Learns About Bullies from the We Do Listen Foundation.  The books are meant to help children with their self-esteem, how to deal with bullying and violence and much more. These are truly a “must have” for our children.  Awareness about bullying has reached a new high!  Educating and talking to our children about bullying promotes awareness as well as helps leave the door open for communicating about bullying.  Please take a moment and check out S.O.S. Mom and participate in this giveaway!

Totsy Sales And Amazing Shopping For Mom And Kids!

Totsy… an adorable name for an adorable and affordable website!  Clearly, I am a shopaholic.  Lately though, my shopping tendencies have been tame.  Realizing that my shopping tendencies were on the verge of needing psychiatric help, I took a baby step back to assess the situation.  The results… compulsive shopper and spendthrift.  Knowing full well that I needed to change my ways, I resorted to watching my wallet a bit more.  Really though, that meant not taking my wallet with me… anywhere.

Although I clearly needed to reduce my spending habits, having two growing children, (girls to boot) I could not put a complete halt to purchasing clothes and accessories.  That said, I needed to budget, more so though, I needed to budget smart and get the most out of my money.  On a mission, yet, still thinking of bags full of new and fun clothes and accessories, I got really lucky.  I was introduced to an amazing website called Totsy!

Totsy is all about the latest trends… at a discount off course.  I realize there are a few sites similar.  Heck, I am a member of them!  Regardless though, Totsy is different compared to them.  The difference… selection.  All I needed to do was sign up to realize what I had been missing.  After I signed up (which, by the way is free, and only took a second), I was able to browse through their  long… long list of brands and items for sale… big sales might I add!  After about 15 minutes of sheer enjoyment, and a tired computer, I was able to order a large quantity of clothing and more for my little ones and not feel a big dent in my wallet!  Let’s just say that this whole money management/budget thing may not cramp my style after all!  Check it out!  To get these deals, all you have to do is click on the link and remember, it’s FREE to join!
