Tranquility

The light that lives in the sun,
Lighting all the world,
The light of the moon,
The light that is in fire:
Know that light to be mine.

My energy enters the earth,
Sustaining all that lives:
I become the moon,
Giver of water and sap,
To feed the plants and the trees.

Flame of life in all,
I consume the many foods,
Turning them into strength
That upholds the body.

I am in all hearts,
I give and take away
Knowledge and memory:
I am all that the Vedas tell,
I am the teacher,
The knower of Vedanta.

Rwanda Path To Peace

Haiti – Rwanda Path To Peace – Macy’s – Artisans

“Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic.”

- Oscar Wilde

The quote above by Oscar Wilde epitomizes what I am about to introduce you to.  Over a decade ago, the people of Rwanda endured what most will never experience.  In a matter of about 100 days, the women of Rwanda were subject to watching close to one million of their families and neighbors destroyed by genocide.

Imagine yourself in the midst of this… A woman, living in a country where you were considered a second-rate citizen, left with nothing.  In an effort to restore hope, the women of Rwanda embraced their roots and began weaving beautiful baskets to sell, so they could give more for their families.  The baskets are not only exquisite, they are a true symbol of strength.  By weaving the baskets, the women of Rwanda have been working towards a greater good.  After experiencing one of the worst evils, these women are working towards rebuilding their lives and their communities.

In 2005, Willa Shalit, started The Rwanda Path To Peace Project.  She partnered with Macy’s and helped the women of Rwanda’s dream become a reality.  Through the partnership, the women of Rwanda have been able to generate income to put their children through school, provide healthcare for their young and more.  Each basket is made with craftsmanship and pride.  The women of Rwanda have a cause… and they are achieving it.

I was fortunately introduced to this project through a wonderful email I received. Shortly after, I received a beautiful basket in the mail.  I sat for a few moments just staring at it, thinking of the story behind the woman who made this basket. I thanked God that I did not have to endure what she did.  I also thanked God that I was blessed with such a beautiful gift and even more, a wonderful story to tell every time someone looks at my basket.  I can only hope you will take a moment and read their story on the Macy’s website, hopefully buy a basket, and help the lives of these amazing women, and their families.
