A harmonious surprise

Love a great surprise… especially when it comes in the form of great music…

I never thought I would become a Rihanna fan. I also never took a moment to try. It just goes to show that one should never judge a book (or at least the music) by its cover.

This piano version of “Love The Way You Lie” is aaaah-maz-inggg!

Music Sets All Stages… What Stage Do You Want To Be On Today?
The Stage… Lights dim, feet up, thinking of your youth with a smile on your face.

Playlists have taken over the music scene. Finding a great playlist that isn’t a compilation of various artists, albums and genres is a rarity. The Gaslight Anthem however, have such a great range, they deserve a playlist of their own.

I may be in my 30′s, but if there is one thing I still remember, it’s the days of vinyl. I miss my old records. I even remember my first album, Alvin And The Chipmunks. Pretty sure it was the Christmas version. Around the same time Alvin And The Chipmunks came into my life, I was introduced to Twisted Sister. I would sit on my bedroom floor and play “We’re Not Going To Take It” by Twisted Sister over and over again. I dreamed of being a rebel during my youth. Fortunately, it was only a dream.

Music, being such an important part of my life, sets the stage for any mood I want to be in.  The Gaslight Anthem induces feelings of nostalgia with almost all of their songs, which I love. The beauty is that I cannot pinpoint exactly why or what causes it. The music has an Alternative/Punk rock vibe with a folk flare while incorporating a style similar to Bruce Springsteen. Their music invokes a sense of wanting to be at a drive-in movie with a first love. Each song has a little something that makes me want to live in the moment, as long as the moment incorporates each word in the lyrics.

The latest album Handwritten, by The Gaslight Anthem, could be one of the best albums I have heard. Between songs like “45″ and “Teenage Rebellion”, Brian’s voice, the band’s incredible musicians, and the range of instruments used, the album is nothing short of infectious. Get the album, dim those lights, and let the music consume you. You will not be disappointed.

Music Sets All Stages…Another Hendrix Moment…

Music Sets All Stages… What does your stage look like today?

What can I say… The idea was to write tonight. I had every intention of opening up a random page out of my book “1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die“. I wanted to pick a song, listen to the music and expand on it. Nothing like stumbling on a new artist or music that I like or have never heard before, regardless of how long they have been around. It just make things more interesting.

Instead, I spent the night laying on my couch with just one candle lit listening to the rhythmic and paralyzing songs of Hendrix. After 5, 10, 15 minutes of his tunes, I realized that I was going to do nothing more. No social networking, no writing or experimenting with different music… Just Hendrix and I… one fantastic candle… and off course, to commemorate my “Jimmy moment”, I did have some incense burning in the background.

The night was fantastic. I recommend you try it. Remember though, keep those headphones on, block out all other sounds, and light just one candle… Breath with the music and let yourself go!

Does Music Bring Out Your Sexy?

Does Music Bring Out Your Sexy?  An old blog I recently found and decided to share…

I am going to try to keep this blog short and sweet for two reasons.  First, it’s almost 2am.  Second, I dont know if what I am about to write about will create a “too much for me to handle” feeling.  As I spent my evening lounging in my living room, I put on my headphones like I do every night and stumbled upon a group of songs that I listen to when I am either getting ready, or already on route for a night out.  Music invokes so many emotions for me, but the best is when it brings on an empowered, goddess like feeling.  “Got You Where I Want You” by the Flies, “Artificial Red” by Mad Season, “Beautiful” by Moby are all songs that bring out the sexy in me.  They are some of my true feel goods, and add an erotic sense of strength in a female when listened to.  There are definitely more, but it is amazing how songs can induce passionate feelings, and even bring out dominant behavioristics.  Clearly some can create a subdued response, but these songs and a few more in particular, bring out a soft aggression.  They not only make me feel feminine, but add a sense of security within myself.  I’m not sure if each of the artists were hoping for these results in women, but, I am sure that their popularity increased with the female race because of them.  Moby for instance, is a compelling and talented artist, yet, generally associated with a certain genre.  By creating his song “Beautiful”, he captured a different type of listener and developed a new following.  Take the band MGMT, and listen to their synthesized, self-proclaimed drug induced work.  The assumption would be that their fans are composed of club kids and teen dreams.  “Time to Pretend” kicks in, and although the words are not associated with anything sexy, once again, the music brings on vivid thoughts and an energy that makes one beleive they are on top of the world.  If a song by MGMT is thrown into your playlist while driving, watch your speed.  Somehow, you become invincible and will push the limit.  Even songs that slow it down a notch can create intense emotions associated with sex.  “Beautiful Girl” by INXS, another one of my all time favorites, is a real feel good.  Then we have the polar opposite.  I remember when Kings of Leon first came out with “Sex on Fire” and there wasn’t a woman in a bar or club that didn’t want to rock your world… regardless of who you were.  Hearing that song makes women feel irresistable, which men feed into.  It is almost as if your pheremones get pumped out of your body while the music flows through your veins. Music brings out ones inner thoughts, and if it strikes you perfectly, it can make you invoke the same feelings in others that you have for yourself at that very moment.  Remember how strong music is and what it can do for you… dont let those feelings go, but…be careful how you use their power.  Music has done incredible things for me.  Let it do the same for you.

Music Sets All Stages… Today’s Stage = Rage

SMS Audio STREET by 50
The StageTrying to resist the urge to aggressively lash out…  My Music Playlist… starting with “Welcome To The Jungle” by Guns N Roses… and that is just the beginning…

My day began quite well, with the exception of my girls having a sleep over last evening, and the awful emptiness I felt knowing they weren’t in their own beds and near me through the night.  Ok, so maybe my day did not start off that great.  Rather than bore you with complete details of the day, I’d rather focus on a totally different topic… Mean People.  Yes, you all know who I am talking about… and most likely, all of you have been the “mean person” at one time or another.  I am sure I have.  Unfortunately, today happened to be one of those days where I was the target of other people’s frustrations.  It started with one, moving on to another and then, yet another.  The last, someone I don’t even know.  With that, I really mean that I do not know them.  The individual I am referring to only has only a screen name, and a picture, none of which define who the individual really is.

Reality… We all have bad days.  While absorbed in a psychology book during my senior year in high school, I was fascinated by something I read.  It was a simple word called displacement.  Displacement though, was not referenced in my book with a simple meaning.  Instead, the chapter I read explained a lot about human behavior.  We, as humans, tend to displace our anger at those that are closest to us.  The reasoning… because we know, as humans, the people closest to us are most likely to forgive.  It made complete sense and resonated with me quite well.  I think everyone I know has done that at one time or another.  When I have a bad day at work, I cannot say that I don’t take out my frustrations on my husband or parents from time to time.  It is just easier I suppose.

This brings me to today… Three individuals… Three separate occurrences… All of which include displacing their frustrations on me.  The first two I have no problem brushing off.  I even received apologies.  The third… not so sure I can forgive.  Funny how the one I do not know is the one I consider unforgiveable.  Question though… is this the opposite of what I learned in high school or simply me, being stubborn?  It may even be a bit of both but somehow, I find it easier to forgive someone that knows me than someone who chooses to blatantly disrespect and hurt someone they do not even know without any remorse or consideration… hence… Rage… Today’s stage… And My Playlist… Rage…

Now For A Standard Disclaimer:  Caution… Do not listen to this playlist while driving (anything).  Songs may invoke feeling invincible thus, making you believe accelerating will not get you in trouble or stopped by law enforcement.  Another quick note to throw a little twist on this whole post… Moments before I hit the little update button to the right of this post, I received a message from “the unknown displacer”… the message negated every assumption I had regarding his/her nastiness… That’s right.  I take it all back as I mistook what was written and am now feeling like a complete and utter fool.  Regardless, DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE DISCLAIMER.

Music Sets All Stages… An Evening Filled With Great Music

The Stage… A smooth glass of Pinot Noir sitting next to me, glasses on, hair in a bun, comfortable clothes, two relaxed dogs laying by my feet, the sweet smell of incense and some fantastic tunes… just like the song playing at this very moment, “and that’s the way I like it.”

Rarely do I have the opportunity to spend time writing and listening to music I love without interruption.  Fortunately, tonight is one of those nights I consider a luxury.  Although I don’t focus on writing about music on Trending Mom, it is a true passion of mine.  Music affects me in so many ways but the one that stands out most… no matter what mood I am in, I can change it with the right lyrics and tunes.  Before I choose my playlist for the day, I ask myself one simple question… What stage do I want to be on today?

And so the stage is set.  Relaxed, carefree and feeling pretty great, playing the song “We Are  Young (feat. Janelle Monáe)” by Fun.  Considered alternative, the song itself sets an almost perfect stage.  With an awesome chorus and great lyrics, the song reminds me of my college years when I had no cares, yet, didn’t know how good I had it.  The song takes me back to my youth creating feelings of nostalgia and beliefs of being invincible.  Next on tonight’s playlist, “Somebody That I Used To Know” by You Don’t Even Have To.  Like many people I know, the lyrics in this song clearly resonate with me.  With its steady tempo and ability to make those listening to sway, the song invokes a bit of anger as well as feeling like I am on top of the world and have the upper hand.  After a few breakups in my time, I can genuinely say the song gives me a bit of satisfaction as well as a cute, yet smug look on my face.

My mood soon changed when “Wild Ones (featuring Sia)” by Flo Rider came on.  For those of you that know the song I am referring to, enough said.  For those that have yet to hear the song, I have only one word… Hot.  Flo Rider as usual, does a great job.  Sia, on the other hand… her voice is insane and much to be admired!  I genuinely don’t know anyone that could pull off the lyrics as well as she does.  Her sweet, yet sexual flare, makes the song a force to be reckoned with.   As the song softened to an end, Lilly Allen and her perfect Brit accent quickly consumed me.  While listening to “Who’d Have Known,” and knowing what was coming next on the playlist, I immediately felt compelled to stand up and start dancing.  It’s the same kind of feeling I get when I ride in the passenger seat of a convertible, with the wind in my face and simply enjoying every bit of it… And then… the throw back.  The late Miss Winehouse gives “Our Day Will Come” a certain flare like no other.  The song never had such soul.

Although I could go on forever talking about all the music I listened to this evening, I prefer getting back to it with no distractions.  After all, it is a luxury I’m rarely given the opportunity to savor.  I can only ask you remember a few simple words… “Music Sets All Stages”… So, the question is, what stage do you want to be on today?

Music Sets All Stages

IN SEARCH OF THE DAYS WHERE MUSIC LEGENDS WERE MADE… IN SEARCH OF THE NEXT ARTIST WHO WILL MAKE ME WANT TO MAKE THEIR STAGE MINE… MUSIC SETS ALL STAGES… WHAT STAGE ARE YOU ON TODAY…

[amazon asin=B001BBH6OU&text=www.amazon.co.us&template=mp3 clips&chan=default]THE STAGE – JAZZY WITH SOUL, BEAUTIFUL VOICES AND LYRICS THAT ROCK…

AMAZING… A bold statement on my part but true. The playlist described in this post is a compilation of women who know how to set the tune. Think of yourself, morning, noon or night… this playlist can accompany almost any mood.

First off, in the morning with a cup of tea, kids sitting at the table, puppies basking in the sun and you simply enjoying the morning air… Starting with a little Carla Bruni, whether in French or English she has a soothing and intoxicating voice. She is a nice start because her music eases you into a trance like mode. Just comfortable, peaceful and soft with a cool vibe. I love the guitar and lack of too many noticeable instruments in her recordings. The next to throw into the mix is definitely a little Amy Winehouse. I have to say that I was not a huge fan of her commercialized music. If you actually delve into her past albums and more current songs that were not highly publicized, you will find a voice that will never be forgotten. She is absolutely amazing. Starting off or ending the day with Amy Winehouse makes you want to close your eyes and slowly rock from side to side or grab your partners hands and dance about in the middle of your kitchen or pretty much anywhere. Her renditions of “Our Day Will Come’ and “Will You Still Love Me” are as good if not better than the originals (I generally despise re-makes of original songs).

Generally I like adding some mix into a playlist but the mood I get into when listening to these ladies is tough to let flow into a different mood so I am going to stick with these amazing voices and add Adele next. The one description that comes to mind when I listen to her voice is simply powerful. Her words are perfect. Each song is perfect and I have yet to dislike anything that flows out of her. Some of it may be a bit morbid but it still doesn’t matter. She emphasizes just the right way and her voice is like an oversized punctuation mark. She’s just awesome. Moving from Adele, I have only a few more to add for today. First Christina Perri. When I first heard “Jar Of Hearts” all I could think of was how many of my friends would have loved to hear that just at the apex of a break up. She speaks to not only the pop culture teenager but the 30 something in the middle of their world falling apart. Never mind the fact that her voice is beautiful! ”Bluebird” and “Arms” are another two of her songs you must listen to! She is not only a great artist but her songs are easy to belt out along with her and truthfully, make you feel pretty empowered.

The last artist/song I am going to write about now is Regina Spector. Now, she doesn’t quite fit into this Jazzy mode but I have to mention her. Her song “The Call” was featured in the movie “The Chronicles Of Narnia”. It was played during the closing credits and I ended up buying the album simply because of this song. She brings tears to my eyes and happiness at the same time while listening to her words. It’s like listening to someone about a lost love or the thought of a loved one leaving to go over seas. The hope, love and thought of losing them all at once encompass you. Emotional as it is, the song is incredible and I suggest taking a moment to feeling it for yourself.
