What type of consumer are you

There are two types of consumers.  Those that use what they buy… and then there are the ones that buy things but don’t really use them.  Then, there is my kind of consumerism…

I like to buy things (clearly).  My usage though, is a little quirky.  I have made a list of things I buy and how I use them.

Things I buy, and use frequently, and even overuse:
Clothes
Shoes
Books

Things I buy, use, then stop using or use sparsely because I don’t want to run out:
Eyeshadow
Shampoo
Hand Soap
Incense
Perfume
Stationary
Candles
And the list goes on…

Don’t get me wrong now, if I am running out of a great soap or shampoo, it’s not like I stop cleaning myself or my hair… I just resort to one I don’t like as much. The problem here, I am not living for today. Heck, if I buy it, I should use it right? That’s what it is here for! I should use these things until their death! I attribute my hoarding to my parents. Sorry mom and dad but I am selling you down the river! My whole life, mom and dad told me not to waste. Somehow, the term “waste” resonated with me and now don’t “waste” has become a don’t “use” ’til it’s death fear of mine… as if I cannot get more. We are the land of plenty right? This is another piece of the puzzle to my quest for true sanity.

Moral of the story, if you buy it, use it. If you don’t want to deplete it, don’t buy it.

Welcome To Saveology

When I first heard about Saveology, I didn’t pay much attention, assuming they were like many other websites that boast about their “supposed” amazing deals.  Soon after, their name came up more and more.  Every so often, I would read about deals they offered, but like many other websites that claimed to have great prices available, I was skeptical. I chose to disregard their advertisements, and I assumed there had to be a catch to signing up.

Less than a week ago, I was offered a free membership to their dining club.  I decided to look at the offer.  There was no catch… I tried finding the fine print in my offer email, but there was none.  It seemed too good to be true.  Being a skeptic, I figured that I still wouldn’t really have a need for Saveology but accepted the offer nonetheless.

A few days into my “Welcome” email, I started to receive deals here and there via email (you can decide whether you want emails sent to you or not).  The deals were very appealing.  So appealing that I could not resist accessing their website.  The first deal I saw was for a gadget (of course that would catch my eye).  Unfortunately, the deal was for something I purchased a few days earlier… only the offer on Saveology was 70% less than what I just paid for the EXACT same thing.  It didn’t take much more for me to realize that I was sold.  I bought my little gadget from Saveology, returned my recent purchase to my local store and left with a smile.  I won’t go into the details of my browsing sessions since then but can honestly say, Saveology was not only a pleasant surprise, but has saved me a bit of money already on items I actually needed.

Oh, and what they say about loyalty getting rewarded… 100% Factual!
Just a few more deals happening now:

$19.99 Bluetooth Keyboard For iPad – Choice Of 4 Colors! – CLEARANCE!
$2 for the iPhone/iPod/iPad Charger Keychain ($19.95 Value)

My Morning Cup Of Joe…

AlexandAni.com
And things that make me go… or not…

Just being is hard enough… Add a full-time job, a part-time job (writing), humanitarian efforts, motherhood, being a wife, and simply trying to have a life into the equation, and you might end up like me… exhausted!  For years, I chose to ignore what I saw every night; my tired face looking in a mirror.  After writing about my love of audiobooks, I finally decided to face the facts.  A few years ago, I never would have spoken of an audiobook.  My love of books, feeling the pages, writing in them and absorbing each read is too strong!  As much as I like my audiobooks, I still love the feeling of holding a book in hand.  Unfortunately, that has become a rarity since my eyes are too weak to read in the evening (the only down time I seem to have).

An average day in the life of me!  Here’s the skinny:

  1. When I wake up in the morning, feeling like P-diddy (like how I incorporated the song Tik Tok?  Call me a dork)… K, back to the song… When I wake up in the morning UNLIKE P-diddy, all I want to do is crawl back into bed… instead, I have no choice but to get up (after hitting the snooze button of course).
  2. Generally, I let the dogs out, and then back in.
  3. Moments later, my computer starts calling my name…
  4. I check my schedule for the day, answer some emails and try to write a bit.
  5. By now, it’s time to wake up the girls.
  6. We gather in the kitchen and I make them breakfast.
  7. After breakfast, I take a quick shower and then get the girls ready for drop off.  During summer vacation, I don’t have to deal with drop offs but still get them ready.
  8. I grab my morning cup of Joe and… off to work I go.  At work, my day is filled with… drum roll please… work.
  9. At some point during the day/afternoon, I either pick up the girls from school, or wherever they may be.
  10. Once home, I feed the dogs, feed the kids, feed myself, then feed myself again, and again (kidding).
  11. The girls and I do some reading and writing before I put them to bed.
  12. Once in bed, the second part of my day begins.  By now, it’s usually 8pm.
  13. I pick up the house, get into my pajamas and head straight for my computer.
  14. This is when I write, design websites, do some social networking and then write some more.
  15. Around 11:30/midnight, I turn off my computer and head for bed, iPad in hand.
  16. This is when I do a little research for my blog and have the opportunity to read (ok, so I should really say be read to).
  17. Sometime around 1:00am or so, I usually fall asleep, headphones still on… 3:00am comes pretty quick… that is when I usually wake up to burning ears and in need of a bathroom break before falling back to sleep.
  18. 6:30am… my alarm goes beeeeeeep… buzzzzzz…. beeeeeeep… buzzzzz… then, I hit snooze.

Although I would love to do nothing more than sleep my day away once in a while, the moments I have time off are better spent with my family… awake.  Below, are a list of things that keep me going… as a mother, wife, corporate executive, writer, humanitarian and tired lover of life…
First, my Stainless Steel Travel Coffee Press by Bodum(R) 3.5 cup

Next, my Opportunity Rocks Headphones in Hardwood

Because everyone should have a fantastic pair of headphones!

My Slow and Tell Clock always keeps me on time (my time that is)

What no girl should ever be without… Store Trooper USB Flash Drive in R2-D2(Geekette? “Who Me?”)

A perfect little Through the Post Clutch for running quick errands and when I don’t want to carry my maMMoth of a bag!

A girl definitely cannot live without her chocolate! My preference, Dylan’s Candy Bar Malted Milk!

MMMMM… Chocolate… I could go on forever about my morning cup of Joe and the things that make me go… but chocolate is now calling my name… until next time… xoxo

Rwanda Path To Peace

Haiti – Rwanda Path To Peace – Macy’s – Artisans

“Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic.”

- Oscar Wilde

The quote above by Oscar Wilde epitomizes what I am about to introduce you to.  Over a decade ago, the people of Rwanda endured what most will never experience.  In a matter of about 100 days, the women of Rwanda were subject to watching close to one million of their families and neighbors destroyed by genocide.

Imagine yourself in the midst of this… A woman, living in a country where you were considered a second-rate citizen, left with nothing.  In an effort to restore hope, the women of Rwanda embraced their roots and began weaving beautiful baskets to sell, so they could give more for their families.  The baskets are not only exquisite, they are a true symbol of strength.  By weaving the baskets, the women of Rwanda have been working towards a greater good.  After experiencing one of the worst evils, these women are working towards rebuilding their lives and their communities.

In 2005, Willa Shalit, started The Rwanda Path To Peace Project.  She partnered with Macy’s and helped the women of Rwanda’s dream become a reality.  Through the partnership, the women of Rwanda have been able to generate income to put their children through school, provide healthcare for their young and more.  Each basket is made with craftsmanship and pride.  The women of Rwanda have a cause… and they are achieving it.

I was fortunately introduced to this project through a wonderful email I received. Shortly after, I received a beautiful basket in the mail.  I sat for a few moments just staring at it, thinking of the story behind the woman who made this basket. I thanked God that I did not have to endure what she did.  I also thanked God that I was blessed with such a beautiful gift and even more, a wonderful story to tell every time someone looks at my basket.  I can only hope you will take a moment and read their story on the Macy’s website, hopefully buy a basket, and help the lives of these amazing women, and their families.

Turn Baby Pictures Into Wall Art

Paper Culture

Ever since my daughters were born, I have been an over the top picture-taking momma.  We have one wall in my house which is covered in framed pictures of my girls.  One for every year as they grow.  Finding frames which are affordable and similar in appearance has never been an easy task.  That is, until I stumbled upon Baby Monogram Bamboo Wall Art – Bamboo.

Instead of searching for the perfect frame, which can also be quite expensive, I upload photos of my girls on the paper culture website.  Through Paper Culture, I can order the Bamboo Wall Art with my daughter’s pictures on them.  My wall of frames is now a wall of photos hand mounted  on a 100% bamboo panel. With my order, Paper Culture will plant a tree in honor of my daughters with each order.  The designers at Paper Culture will even monogram the frames or add a name using custom colors which match the colors in your photo.  These are not only great for your own children, they also make for beautiful wedding pictures and more!  They are truly great for yourself and gift giving.

Save 25% off all Bamboo Wall Art! Use voucher code: BAMB25 on the Review Order page before July 2, 2012. Shop Now!
