Music for the child in us

Think… daydreaming, summer, butterflies and bubbles… Those are just some of the thoughts listening to Kurr, by Amiina invoke.

The album has an ethereal sound that is not only soothing, but  brings a smile when listened to.  I found it yesterday during my travels through the cyber-world.  Since then, I have listened to it non-stop and have yet to grow tired of it. It was love the moment I began listening.

Take a listen…

Summer is in full swing.  There are always a few “must have” items that I need to buy for my girls every summer…

Finding a comfortable pair of summer sandals for my girls is always at the top of my summer shopping list.  Crocs, once again (4th summer in a row) have come in on TOP!

My daughter’s typical summer wardrobe “must haves”…

  2. 2 to 3 bathing suits each,
  3. Bathing suit cover up (at least 1 each),
  4. Girly summer beach towels,
  5. BPA Free water bottles,
  6. Even more dresses,
  7. A great pair of summer sandals.

Now for the “perfect” summer sandals…

  1. They “must” be pretty,
  2. They “must” have pink on them,
  3. They “must” be comfortable,
  4. They “must” be durable,
  5. They “must” be water-resistant,
  6. They “must” get the seal of approval from my little ones…

The Poolside Turtle

The Poolside Turtle… And  A Twist… Of course I couldn’t go a whole week without mentioning some fun with my girls!  Well, yesterday, “D” and I caught our daughter Julia doing one of the oddest things…

As we were sitting poolside, much to our disappointment, Julia had found, yet another floatation device to use in the pool.  Every time Julia finds something to help her stay afloat in water, she regresses with her ability to swim by herself. Somehow though, Julia is always able to “borrow” some poor child’s floatation device… most likely through some sort of bargaining or possibly a quiet threat. Yesterday was no different from most days and “D” and I watched Julia as she made her way through the deep end with yet another floatie.

As she swam past us, we got a cute little wave from Julia and then she went back to some serious swimming… That was, until we watched her showing off in front of a pretty lifeguard.  Although unsure of what she was trying to do, I will leave you this… It’s a picture of baby Julia, doing what we now call… drum roll please… The Poolside Turtle :)

Healthy Summer Hair

Summer is here!  This summer has been all about having fun in the sun, the pool, and of course, more sun, leading to more pool time… Unfortunately, due to the sun and pool, my hair hasn’t enjoyed the summer quite as much as I have.

For years, I believed my hair was one of my best features… then came this year.  I first noticed the disgusting change when I was swimming in the pool with my girls.  I noticed a prickly feeling on the nape of my neck.  Disturbed, and assuming it was my bathing suit strap, I went to move it away.  Much to my dismay, it was not my bathing suit.  In fact, it was my hair.  Hair is supposed to feel soft when submersed in water.  Instead, mine felt like Jute which only meant one thing… split ends!  After leaving the pool, I went straight home and jumped in the shower.  I conditioned my hair over and over again, hoping to change the feeling.  It didn’t help one bit.  My hair still felt like crap, in turn, looking even worse.

The diagnosis… Nasty Swimming Pool Hair! (aka The Pool Head)

We all know how women can be… do you really want to hear them whisper “gross, look at that pool head” as you walk by?  Never mind how awful rough hair feels… throw some humidity into the mix and well, you get the gist.  The next day, I went to the mall in search of something that would help… What I found… My new favorite hair product by Wen… it even smells pretty!

Books For Summer Reading And More!

468x60 - Books

Summer reading in 2012, the best books and more… There is nothing like being engrossed in a great book!  If there was one thing I could do to relax, it would be to pick up a great book, cuddle up on my couch and read.  Unfortunately, having a full-time job, a love of writing and of course, a family… somehow, reading any book is a challenge.

An average (summer vacation) day for this momma…

  1. 6:45am – morning alarm goes off
  2. 6:45am – hit snooze on my alarm clock
  3. 6:55am – morning alarm goes off
  4. 6:55am – hit snooze on my alarm clock
  5. 7:05am – morning alarm goes off
  6. 7:05am – hit snooze on my alarm clock
  7. 7:15am – morning alarm goes off
  8. 7:15am – hit snooze on my alarm clock
  9. 7:25am – morning alarm goes off
  10. 7:25am – get up…

Next, I wake up the dogs, let them out… then, the little ones… put breakfast on the table… time for me to get ready.  A kiss for the dogs, a kiss for the kiddos, a kiss for the hubby and off to work I go.  At work, I do what most people do… work. Around 5:15pm, I generally start thinking of wrapping it up. Unfortunately, I rarely leave the office before 6:30pm.  Finally home, it is time for some quality time with the family.  Cuddled on the couch, a bit of reading to the girls and then it’s time to tuck the little bugs into bed.  After giving them their goodnight kisses, this mom generally eats a quick bite followed by some writing.  Once finished with my writing, I can begin my reading…

Page one – check √

Page two – check √

Page three – ch… ch… ch… not so much… unfortunately, at this point, it is usually lights out for me… although, it is usually D putting out the lights as I rarely make it that far.  Regardless, I thought I would share this list of Best Selling Books This Summer!  Oh how I wish I had the time to read a few…

Summer Wedding Makeup – Moisturizer Or Foundation

Before my wedding, I remember people telling me a million things starting with the word “don’t.”  The “don’t” list included things like…

Don’t cut your hair before your wedding.”
Don’t go tanning the day of your wedding or the day before because you might burn.”
Don’t eat too much before you put on your wedding gown.”
Don’t lose too much weight before your wedding day or you might not fit into your wedding gown.”

Fortunately, I received a lot of great “don’t” advice.  Now, if only someone told me “Don’t trust your dermatologist even though he is a doctor and you think he knows best!”

Six months before my wedding, I experienced what many women might consider the ultimate nightmare… My wish to look beautiful on my wedding day was no different from any other bride to be.  Unfortunately, that want led to an awful experience.  Having suffered from a pimple or two in my lifetime, I wanted the perfect skin for my wedding day.  My dermatologist suggested a laser treatment to even my skin tone and give me a healthy glow. Obviously it seemed like a no brainer.  I made an appointment immediately.  The following week, I sat through two hours of the treatment expecting genius results.  Much to my surprise, and my dermatologists, the results were not so pretty.  I left the office with a puffy face which looked like it had burns all over it.  The marks were in the shape of little honeycombs.  I asked what it was and my dermatologist said the infamous word followed by some more words… “don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal to have a reaction after a treatment like that.  You should be fine by tomorrow.”  Well, weeks went by and I still was NOT fine.  I had 3 other appointments with him, all resulting in similar responses… “Don’t worry… It won’t be like this forever.”

Six months later, my wedding day came.  I still had honeycomb marks all over my face.  I spent my honeymoon poolside with a bag of makeup at my side. Every chance I got, I would rush to the bathroom and reapply so nobody would see the disgusting marks all over my face.  It has been 9 years and I still have a few lingering marks which are visible.  Since that experience, I have struggled with the thought of leaving my house without makeup on.  I know I no longer look terrible but the experience made me a bit insecure about my skin. Recently, I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a product that I had to share!  NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 St. Moritz 1.9 oz!!!  I realize that many people know about, and use tinted moisturizer but try to understand, I would never have thought to use anything without maximum coverage until recently.  This stuff is AMAZING!  I put it on, it evened my skin tone, gives me just the right amount of coverage, does NOT make me break out and has sunscreen!  Even better, I can sit poolside, put it on as often as I want, look fantastic and never feel like I will have nasty makeup running down my face while I swim… It’s simply fantastic!

Fashion Trends For Little Ones… Too Revealing?

This afternoon, my girls and I went shopping for summer clothes.  Instead of finding clothes suited for children, what we found were a wide array of adult clothing, shrunk, and being sold as children’s clothes.  My girls, unfortunately, did not realize that the clothes mistakenly showcased in the children’s department were NOT for them.

What happened to the days where clothing stores geared towards children actually sold children’s apparel?  In the past, I have heard my friends with girls older than mine state how hard it was for them to find decent clothing suited for children.  Until recently, I had been lucky since the clothes my girls fit into were only available in the baby/toddler sections.  Unfortunately, much to my dismay, my daughters are getting older and no longer fit in toddler clothes.  They graduated to the “kids” section which I realized today, may have more revealing clothes available than the adult section…

Starting with the basics, the everyday t-shirt.  No longer is it easy to find a basic t-shirt. Instead, they all have a little something to them… or should I say they are missing a little something…  Let’s talk about shorts for a moment, shall we?  I recall wearing jams at one point in my life.  I also remember my love of shorts which I were suitable for soccer and other sports.  My jeans shorts were regular length… not too short… not too long.  Talia tried on a pair of jeans shorts today.  She is your average size 5.  I was sure the size 5 shorts she tried were marked wrong today as I believe she needed a pair of boy shorts under the jeans shorts in order to avoid the whole world being able to see more than they should.  Figuring the size 6 would be a better option, I had her try those on.  The only difference in the two was that the size 6 fell off her and the size 5 did not.  The size 6 unfortunately, needed a pair of boy shorts under them as well.  We moved on to dresses next.  Assuming I would be able to find a few dresses suited for my daughters was a big mistake.  The majority were strapless…  strapless huh?  My girls are 4 and 5!  First of all… a 4 or 5-year-old child should not be expected to keep a strapless dress up since they have nothing on their bodies to help with that.  Secondly, a 4 or 5-year-old girl is not going to realize that a strapless dress has fallen down, nor should they have to!

Today’s shopping spree was a flop considering the lack of clothing, or should I say, lack of material on the clothing found.  Regardless, the girls and I still had a great day.  I let them fill up a bag of candy each at the ultimate candy shop!  Lollipops in hand, and big smiles on their faces, they didn’t complain one bit while I dragged them to my favorite stores.  Off course, why would they?  The girls were well aware that I was carrying their candy in my bag… :)

Summer Reading For Children

Sifting through my planner, I realized that most of the entries pertaining to my daughter’s schools had a common theme… events leading to the end of the school year.  With summer vacation just around the corner, it was a little disturbing to see that the next few months in my calendar were blank with the exception of one little sticky note which read…  SUMMER CAMP!  Well now, who in their right mind adds a note to enroll their kids in summer camp just moments before school is out?  Oh yeah… me.

Never mind enrolling them in a camp, I hadn’t even researched camps in the area.  Not knowing where to start, my mind was made up.  Apart from the kickstart programs I had enrolled the girls in through their school, I began searching for ways to create an entertaining summer for my little ones packed with oodles of fun, and off course, exciting ways to ensure they do not forget what they had learned in school throughout the year.  Finally, I settled on enrolling them in various activities which would keep them occupied through the summer.

My next focus was on the education aspect.  Although the girls are young and I do not want to stress them out with a summer curriculum, I do know that they are both desperate to learn how to read.  As an avid reader myself, I could not be happier that my girls have a shared interest.  The only drawback…  teaching them, and finding the right books to do so.  My girls are opinionated and have very specific interests.  Although there are some fantastic books and other resources geared towards helping children learn to read, the ones we tried failed at holding their interest.  Rather than buy more books my children don’t like, and waste money, I chose a different approach.  Sitting in front of my computer with two peanuts on my lap, my girls and I started browsing through websites, in search of exciting summer reading books!  Between my two little ones, our shopping cart had a total of 32 books they were interested in.  Although I have no intention of purchasing 32 books immediately, I am confident that I have enough books to choose from, that my selective little beings will enjoy!
