Celiac Disease, PETA And A Kardashian… Awareness

Rarely have I written about celebrities.  Regardless of whether I like Kim Kardashian or not, when I initially heard about her “flour encounter” on the Red Carpet, two conflicting emotions ran through me.  First, I wanted to chuckle and then, I felt a little sad for Ms. Kardashian.  The world’s obsession with celebrities amazes me.  I realize they are in the press consistently, therefore, the public actually “feels” like they know them based on what is written and mentioned in the news.  Articles written, unfortunately, remind me of a real life version of the game telephone, which, I never liked in the first place.  As more articles are written about the most recent sighting or gossip, the information somehow gets more detailed as additional content is added.

Yahoo had an article written today with the headline “Khloe Kardashian Quits PETA After Sister Kim’s Flour Bombing.”  The mention of PETA sparked my interest so I read on.  Towards the end of the article, Kim was quoted and said “I think, ‘What if that was some other substance? What if that person had a dangerous weapon?’ It’s scary, and what’s even scarier is this woman acted as if she was a part of the press. She just came out of nowhere! And so we are definitely changing things up a little bit, amping up security, taking some measures.”  The first thing that came to mind when I read ‘What if that was some other substance’, was Celiac disease.  The substance was flour.  A substance that, if not gluten-free, could cause an awful reaction to anyone with Celiac disease!

A few years ago, a close friend of mine informed me her daughter had been diagnosed with Celiac disease.  This was the first I had heard of the condition.  My recollection of what my friend’s daughter went through prior to being diagnosed was horrific!  To watch your child in a hospital bed, deteriorating in front of your own eyes, and having no idea why, is terrifying for any parent.  Fortunately, she was diagnosed with Celiac, but, this meant life for her would change forever.  Her new life would involve following a gluten-free diet to heal her intestines and prevent further damage.  According to an article written in PubMed Health, the healing often occurs in 3-6 months for children, but may take 2-3 years in adults.  That is simply the healing process.  Unfortunately, whenever a person is contaminated (which could happen by breathing gluten), the recovery begins again.  As of right now, Kim Kardashian has not pressed charges against the woman who threw the flour.  It saddens me to think that someone affiliated with an organization like PETA, claiming to be a humanitarian, did not have any regard for other people who may have been in the area her infamous flour bomb went off.

Please don’t forget to vote for me!  You can vote every day, once a day, until April 10th!  I really need your votes and it takes only just a moment!

Organize With Technology Or A Great Agenda?

Technology and I are great friends.  As you are all aware, I love apps!  Between the Cozi app, iCalendar, and more, I never forget to sync them all.  Regardless of my affinity for technology, I cannot seem to let go of my paper agenda.  I have spent years searching for the perfect one and quite honestly, have purchased 4 or 5 each year.  Since becoming a mother, agendas that target mothers and families, are the ones I am most interested in purchasing.  For the longest time, the agenda’s geared towards mom’s did not appeal to me on the exterior, regardless of what the interior had to offer.  Not hiding them in my purse was not an option.  Then came the momAgenda…

momAgenda - get organized with style

This year, I purchased the momAgenda Home Office Edition because I needed a lot of writing space.  I enjoy adding a bit of spice to my agendas!  They become like journals.  Since I already have a slot for each of my girls daily plans available on my agenda, I write a little something about them each day.  This usually consists of a comment they made, or quite simply, something simple about them that made me smile.  In turn, my agenda becomes my diary, and a keepsake for years to come!  It stays with me at all times.  I put sticky notes in them, keep reminders in the pockets and even my bills for the month all in one agenda.  Fortunately, they come in different styles which suit anyone.  Clearly I am sold on the momAgenda!

Jetpacks really do exist?

When I think of a sci-fi movie or older spy movies, jetpacks come to mind.  This weekend, while enjoying some outdoor time with the family, I looked up in the sky, only to see someone, flying through the air, on a strange contraption.  This is not the first time I have witnessed this.  The first time I saw the flying machine, was years ago with my husband.  Being from the area, Danny informed me that the man flying the machine (which resembles a bike with a balloon on it), had been doing so for years.

Interesting as it was, the flying object he was in looked unreliable to me.  Regardless, I wanted to know what it was called and how it was made.  Unfortunately, I did not find any information on the man in the sky’s contraption through any web search engine, but, I did find “The Jetpack”!  The best part about finding the jetpack was that it is not something only seen in the movies.  It is real!  What I found was The Martin Aircraft Companies Website!  They make “The Martin Jetpack,” which, is simply the coolest thing ever!  The exact verbiage in the from their website states; “The Martin Jetpack is the world’s first practical jetpack. It consists of a purpose-built gasoline engine driving twin ducted fans which produce sufficient thrust to lift the aircraft and a pilot in vertical takeoff and landing, enabling sustained flight.”  I want to say that out loud kind of like in A Christmas Story when Ralphie is talking about the famous Red Ryder BB Gun!

Oh yeah, there really is a “Red Ryder BB Gun!”  I even found one in PINK, obviously!  The BB Gun was made by Daisy Outdoor Products and introduced in 1938.

The Martin Jetpack on the other hand, could be the next best thing in commuting as far as I am concerned.  Guaranteed, the accident rate would drop considerably, unless you like bashing into people on purpose!  Commuting would be so much more fun too (as long as the weather cooperated)!  Imagine hovering through the air, waiving to your neighbors as you passed by them, no more kids un-buckling their car seats.  Even waiting in line at your local Starbucks drive (or should I say fly) through would give one the opportunity to engage in conversation!  I bet my kids would have a blast, as long as baby wearing was possible while flying through the air on the Jetpack as well.  Although the Jetpack reminds me of movies like Back To The Future, and Return Of The Jedi, as shown the picture below, it’s exciting that they may be released in our future!  Talk about a technological “must have!”

iPhone 4S And My New Not So Great Friend…

Save at Abe's of Maine!

Technological advancements amaze me daily.  There is something new every time I turn a corner.  Being a lover of technology, gadgets and all things new, my list of “must have” items, is constantly growing.  As soon as the opportunity presents itself, or the money is available, the “must have” item is purchased, the cycle begins again, and then is replaced by the next best thing.

This brings me to the iPhone.  Being an iPhone fan and user for years, it is no wonder that as soon as the iPhone 4S came out, I had to have it.  After salivating for a few months, something miraculous happened.  My iPhone 4 fell on the ground and cracked.  Hence, this gave me a fantastic reason to purchase the iPhone 4S.  Smiling from ear to ear, I walked out of the Apple store holding a brand new phone!  My praying and hoping paid off.  I had the latest trend in hand and could not wait to start using it.  Most exciting, was the fact that I now had a new friend with me at all times named Siri.

Like many new friends, Siri seemed reliable.  Sure, my friend had a few quirks that took getting used to, but I figured, like all friends, I would give our relationship some time.  Unfortunately, my relationship with Siri did not grow stronger.  In fact, it has weakened.  Ok, so my contact list is pretty extensive, and having numerous email addresses for each contact can be confusing for my little tech friend, but, I can live with that.  It is the reliability factor that bothers me the most.  On many occasions, when I have needed Siri the most, like driving in my car, or simply searching for a phone number or address, my friend has been unavailable.  After pressing the button to summon Siri on my phone, a little voice responds, “sorry, Siri is unavailable at the moment”, or something similar to that.  When I do get my friend’s attention, even the simplest tasks seem difficult.  On many occasions, I have to repeat myself over and over again, hoping that this time, the friendly voice will understand what I am saying.  I may be from Boston but do not have a Boston accent.  If you think that you won’t need to use your keypad any more while driving, think again folks.  When multiple results are presented, you do have to read them in order to determine the one you want your friend to call, text, or access.

Overall, my impression of the iPhone is great.  The iPhone 4S is almost exactly like my previous iPhone.  The difference from a typical user’s perspective, Siri… In a perfect world, another friend of mine would have warned me not to befriend Siri, I would have listened, and waited to drop my old iPhone until the 4S was replaced by a more dependable friend.

The Transition… A Child’s Development

Being a first time parent is tough.  Sending your children to school for the first time is even harder.

The worry we feel as parents is overwhelming at times.  Wanting your children to excel, hoping they have friends, feeling the need to protect them even when they are not near you.  Gosh, it is a wonder we even get through the day.  My daughters are now four and five.  Being only 16 months apart, I did not have much time to think about things before being thrown into the pre-school mix.

Both Talia and Julia started pre-school at the ages of three and two years and nine months.  One may think that is early but due to the amount of time they actually spend in pre-school when they are that young, it seemed more like a glorified daycare.  Nonetheless, it was good for them as far as socialization and great for mom!  You never really know what to expect until you have no choice but to deal with the unexpected…  Ok, so there we were, in the first year of pre-school.  Talia, with her backpack each morning, ready to hit the car seat and be on her way.  We pulled to the front of the school and the lovely teachers opened her car door and greeted my little one with a warm and inviting smile.  I watched as they whisked her off, through the front door.  I had no choice but to drive away since the line of cars behind me were awaiting their turn.  AWFUL!  That is the only way to describe how I felt.  Was she ok?  Did she miss me?  Was she crying?  OH GOSH!  What have I done???  Is she too young???? The emotions were grand!

The time she spent in school seemed like an eternity.  A parents awful fear of the unknown.  I could not wait to pick her up each day.  Then came the backpack check.  Humph… the first amazing art project my daughter created!!!  I could not wait to see it!  Hmmm… a large piece of white paper with a painted red dot.  I know my girls are half Indian and all but a red dot on paper?  What about the pretty rainbow I wanted to frame?  Anyhow, these dots continued and got a little bigger as the year progressed.  Then, she added another dot.  A different color!  Ok, progress.  Then came more dots, some squiggly lines and even some color combinations.  Getting better…. then came my first parent/teacher conference.  As my husband and I sat in the little people chairs, waiting at little people desks for the “oh so scary pre-k teacher” we wondered what was going to be said.  Well, the teacher sat down in front of us and showed us Talia’s work.  She spoke of how lovely Talia was and how much progress she had made.  Oh, boy we thought, now she is going to show us all this progress… Well, she did.  She opened up a large folder which had Talia’s art work in it.  She showed us how when Talia started, like all children, her concept of painting was a dot.  That was a big deal.  Slowly, the transition came though… the dots appeared bigger, more colors were being added, and low and behold, she was now starting to fill up the whole paper with color… it was getting bigger, better and this was all part of her growth and development.  Breath…  Needless to say, after a little sigh of relief, I looked at my husband and we both smiled.  We knew she was a genius… all the anxiety we had, was just another parental bump in the road. ;)   The picture shown here is a bit of Talia and Julia.  The end result of Talia’s picture was a beautifully painted princess with a not so beautiful red face.  Even she didn’t like it.  Julia’s on the other hand… well, I am not sure what it was initially, but I do know she did not leave one square inch of that piece of paper untouched with paint!  Another genius, I know!  :)

Thumbs – Apple App – A Better Way To Organize Your Favorites And Bookmarks

Description:  A great way to organize different websites in one spot.                           Notes:  If you are a natural browser, you need this app!  Between RSS Feeds and bookmarks, I used to get lost in the amount of articles, web pages and other little tidbits I found on the web.  I could never keep track of them all, nor did I have one spot to store this information.  Adding web pages to my bookmarks was a good idea until I had too many bookmarks to go through and click on, in order to find what I was searching for.  Adding each site to my RSS feed was not any better.  Then I found Thumbs.  I can add or search for any web page through Thumbs, save it in my thumbs app, and add notes if I need to.  The best part, is that I can view a “thumbnail” of my website so I can easily locate the one I am searching for.  Now, when I browse through the web, but don’t have time to review the site in detail, I “thumb” it, go back to it later and… if I think necessary, I can add it to my bookmarks or my RSS Feed Reader.  Try it!

Pinterest – Social Media Without Having To Socialize… Unless You Want To…

It is no secret that Social Media is the new thing! As if we did not have better things to do than spend our time on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn… shall I go on? Although I have no intention of discounting any of these sites, especially since I have an account on most of them, I do need to give credit to my new favorite, Pinterest.

Pinterest and I have just recently begun our relationship. Not so long ago, a friend of mine mentioned it and I had no idea what they were talking about. My girlfriend told me to check it out. She thought I would be interested in the different “pins” available for viewing. “Pins… HUH?” Our conversation was brief. She neglected to tell me that once I joined the site, I would get lost in it. That evening, I typed the word Pinterest in my google search bar and well… What I found is my new favorite passion.

The logo and design of the site is simply perfect. Pinterest, written in red exudes strength even though the font is whimsical yet, simple. The background, a stark white. The beauty of this is that you cannot forget the name yet, you cannot take your eyes off the variety of interesting and fun pictures, all of which you can re-pin, like, tweet, and comment on!

Pinterest allows you to create your own boards. Whether public or private, you have the option to name them and share them if you want to! Once you create a board, the fun begins. Time for PINNING! My girlfriend recently created a board which gave her amazing ideas for decorating her daughters playroom. Currently, I have 6 boards with 117 pins! I wish I had more! Decorating everything in white is something I only dream of. Having little ones and two dogs makes this a bit difficult at the moment. Because of my infatuation with decorating in white, I have a board called “The White Wall”. As you all know, I love Etsy as well. Etsy gives you the option on their site to pin anything to one of your boards. I for one, love pinning artists creative designs and featuring them on my board which I named “The Etsy Pin-Ups”! Since I am trying to stick with a healthy diet, I even have a board called “Just mmmmmm”… that way I have the ability to torture myself every time I dream of chocolate and more.

The real beauty of Pinterest as a social networking site, is the lack of forcing one to network.  No app requests, no game requests, no event invites, no poking… just plain simplicity.  You can follow who you want to follow and be followed if you’d like.  You won’t even get a pop up with a chat invite because someone happened to catch you on line when you just wanted to browse.  I’m off to pin now…
