Mom Blogs – Which Type Do You Fit In?

CafeMom is the place for moms

Mom blogs are the rage these days.  Oddly enough, although the name of my blog is Trending Mom, I did not start blogging with the hopes of being type cast as a “Mom Blogger.”  When I started blogging, I had no idea about the amount of supposed “Mom Bloggers” in the blogosphere. Trending Mom was simply a name that described what I wanted my blog to be about.  I happen to be a mother.  I happen to enjoy blogging.  I follow my own trends and not societal trends.  I want everyone to do the same.  Trending Mom is my way of re-entering this world as me… Not what others want me to be.

The name of my blog itself has type cast me as a “Mom Blogger.”  Because of this, I get hundreds of emails asking me to review products and apps, do giveaways on my site, hold various contests and more… Unfortunately, I refuse most of these offers.  Here is the deal…

Giveaways – I don’t want to do them because in my opinion (and that is my opinion only, and may be absolutely incorrect according to others), I do not want to gain followers because I am giving away free things.

Reviews – I post reviews for products I like.  98% of my reviews are by choice and not because someone asked me to do one for them or offered to pay me. Clearly, I love apps… well, I get requests for 1-2 app reviews a day on average. Some days more, some none.  To date, I have only taken on reviewing 4 apps in total that I was actually asked to review… I was not paid for any of those. Only one of the apps actually cost money to download and yes, I did get a code to download it for free (still though… I did not receive money).

Contests – Forget about this one.  The only contests I am willing to hold are those that I create on my own.  An example would be my Pinterest Scavenger Hunt with a prize for the winner.  So you ask, who pays for the prize?  Me of course!  The goal of my scavenger hunt is to introduce great websites and companies to the masses.  It is a matter of helping to promote them.  I genuinely enjoy helping others with a will to succeed.

Back to the “Mom Blogging”… The stigma attached with being a Mom Blogger baffles me on a daily basis.  The first time I realized that I was being recognized as a “Mom Blogger,” I decided to navigate through some “Mom Blog” websites.  Here is the nitty-gritty on what I found…

  • Tons, and I mean tons of review blogs,
  • Tons of blogs selling baby products,
  • Tons of blogs talking about mommy hood,
  • Tons of blogs with many contests and giveaways…

What else I found…

  • Talented women,
  • Creative women,
  • Great writers,
  • Beautiful websites,
  • Interesting viewpoints,
  • Highly influential women,
  • Published Authors,
  • Politicians,
  • Actresses,
  • Professionals,
  • and the list just simply goes on…

So here is the reality.  What is a “Mom Blog?”  A “Mom Blog” happens to be a website, with a blog roll, created by a mother, who has their own interests. Oddly enough, minus the mothering aspect, a “Mom Blog” is exactly like any other website.  The only piece that sets it apart from any other website… the MOM/Individual.  It’s time to forget about the typecast and enjoy the content.

Totsy Sales And Amazing Shopping For Mom And Kids!

Totsy… an adorable name for an adorable and affordable website!  Clearly, I am a shopaholic.  Lately though, my shopping tendencies have been tame.  Realizing that my shopping tendencies were on the verge of needing psychiatric help, I took a baby step back to assess the situation.  The results… compulsive shopper and spendthrift.  Knowing full well that I needed to change my ways, I resorted to watching my wallet a bit more.  Really though, that meant not taking my wallet with me… anywhere.

Although I clearly needed to reduce my spending habits, having two growing children, (girls to boot) I could not put a complete halt to purchasing clothes and accessories.  That said, I needed to budget, more so though, I needed to budget smart and get the most out of my money.  On a mission, yet, still thinking of bags full of new and fun clothes and accessories, I got really lucky.  I was introduced to an amazing website called Totsy!

Totsy is all about the latest trends… at a discount off course.  I realize there are a few sites similar.  Heck, I am a member of them!  Regardless though, Totsy is different compared to them.  The difference… selection.  All I needed to do was sign up to realize what I had been missing.  After I signed up (which, by the way is free, and only took a second), I was able to browse through their  long… long list of brands and items for sale… big sales might I add!  After about 15 minutes of sheer enjoyment, and a tired computer, I was able to order a large quantity of clothing and more for my little ones and not feel a big dent in my wallet!  Let’s just say that this whole money management/budget thing may not cramp my style after all!  Check it out!  To get these deals, all you have to do is click on the link and remember, it’s FREE to join!

Fashion Trends For Little Ones… Too Revealing?

This afternoon, my girls and I went shopping for summer clothes.  Instead of finding clothes suited for children, what we found were a wide array of adult clothing, shrunk, and being sold as children’s clothes.  My girls, unfortunately, did not realize that the clothes mistakenly showcased in the children’s department were NOT for them.

What happened to the days where clothing stores geared towards children actually sold children’s apparel?  In the past, I have heard my friends with girls older than mine state how hard it was for them to find decent clothing suited for children.  Until recently, I had been lucky since the clothes my girls fit into were only available in the baby/toddler sections.  Unfortunately, much to my dismay, my daughters are getting older and no longer fit in toddler clothes.  They graduated to the “kids” section which I realized today, may have more revealing clothes available than the adult section…

Starting with the basics, the everyday t-shirt.  No longer is it easy to find a basic t-shirt. Instead, they all have a little something to them… or should I say they are missing a little something…  Let’s talk about shorts for a moment, shall we?  I recall wearing jams at one point in my life.  I also remember my love of shorts which I were suitable for soccer and other sports.  My jeans shorts were regular length… not too short… not too long.  Talia tried on a pair of jeans shorts today.  She is your average size 5.  I was sure the size 5 shorts she tried were marked wrong today as I believe she needed a pair of boy shorts under the jeans shorts in order to avoid the whole world being able to see more than they should.  Figuring the size 6 would be a better option, I had her try those on.  The only difference in the two was that the size 6 fell off her and the size 5 did not.  The size 6 unfortunately, needed a pair of boy shorts under them as well.  We moved on to dresses next.  Assuming I would be able to find a few dresses suited for my daughters was a big mistake.  The majority were strapless…  strapless huh?  My girls are 4 and 5!  First of all… a 4 or 5-year-old child should not be expected to keep a strapless dress up since they have nothing on their bodies to help with that.  Secondly, a 4 or 5-year-old girl is not going to realize that a strapless dress has fallen down, nor should they have to!

Today’s shopping spree was a flop considering the lack of clothing, or should I say, lack of material on the clothing found.  Regardless, the girls and I still had a great day.  I let them fill up a bag of candy each at the ultimate candy shop!  Lollipops in hand, and big smiles on their faces, they didn’t complain one bit while I dragged them to my favorite stores.  Off course, why would they?  The girls were well aware that I was carrying their candy in my bag… :)

Who Are These People???

Rarely do I watch the news.  It is just too depressing.  Logging on to the internet and reading news by choice has always been less emotionally trying on me.  Unfortunately, even that is difficult these days.  I realize I have said this before, but honestly, why do writers and newscasters believe that the front page should consist of terrible things?  They are not necessarily newsworthy!  Unless off course, you are a sociopath or get a kick out of pure and simple misery…

Never mind the newspapers being filled with negative stories…  have you taken a look at most front pages of websites lately?  Take Yahoo for example.  I don’t have anything against yahoo, genuinely.  The site is informative and their search engine is great.  It used to be my home page.  Recently, I converted to Google so that I would not immediately be inundated with things I do not care about or do not want to know about.  When you log into yahoo, the top stories consist of information regarding terrible things happening in our world, or, even worse, celebrity gossip.  The only positive they tend to post is whether someone wore a dress well or not.  Seriously?  Google, fortunately, does not spew out bad reading material the moment you enter.

Today, I somehow ended up on msn now.  The first story that popped into my view was “Tech-savvy citizen rescues 500 dogs from becoming dinner“…  A lovely story about a truck load of dogs, some with collars, some with clothes on, who were on their way to a food processing plant.  Fortunately, the citizen helped stop the awfulness by utilizing a social network.  Ok, so that is not so terrible.  The citizen is clearly a hero, but… what the flip is wrong with the people who stole these poor little beings and who are the even more crazy ones who would consider eating them?  Yes, I know people from different cultures may be inclined to eat animals I would not consider eating but that does not make me ok with it.  Moving on, I got to take my pick of a great list of articles.  The first one, “Family rocks out to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on drive to school“ and next to that article, “Cruel man pays $2,400 for setting fire to neighbor’s cat “… hmm… This got me thinking.  Are they putting stories in this order to punish me?  A family rocking out in the car to a song is kind of funny.  A great little read to rise and shine with a cup of coffee to.  Unfortunately, I don’t really think I would want to drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, read an article about someone setting fire to a cat, and looking at my pretend cat Penelope purring at my feet.  Just another reminder of what may be trending in your world, but not in mine.

What do you write about?

When I finally started telling people I had this blog/website, they always asked what I wrote about.  When I  join blog groups or forums, one question that typically pops up on my screen is, what do you write about?  For Trending Mom, what I write about is a loaded question… and a difficult one at that.

The whole premise behind my website is to write about whatever is trending in my world.  It is about following my own trends and the things important to me in life.  There are days I am candid and focus on my children.  Other days, my focus is on technology.  Off course, anything from the humanitarian realm is always on my radar.  When I read books about blogging, the writers tend to stress having a direction.  I realize having a focus is important. My direction, unfortunately, is never going to be just about one topic.  My focus is never on just one topic.  Again, trending mom is about ALL things trending in my world.

“Are you manic?”  HUH?  Someone actually had the audacity to ask me that after they read through a few pages of my blog.  First off, if I was manic, that would be great because it seems I held their concentration enough for them to continue reading.  The reality, though, is nope.  I am not manic.  I am simply normal.  I have my ups and downs.  I have good days and bad.  Some days, my kids frustrate me.  Some days, it is my husband.  Does it really matter though?  Those are the things that make me normal.  Not manic.  So my response to the individual that asked was, “why, yes, I suppose I may be.  A dose of medication may help me too.  Got any good doctors?”  Clearly (or maybe not), I am kidding!  I did respond to the individual with a simple no.

So here is the deal.  If you choose to visit on occasion, don’t expect the same tone in all of my posts.  Please don’t expect me to post only funnies.  Don’t expect me to rate technology every day or to do product reviews.  That actually brings me to another topic….  the reviews…  You will NEVER find a bad review on my site.  Why, you ask…  Well, I don’t EVER review what I don’t like.  That is never going to change… NOT EVER!  I would rather not write about something than give it a negative response…  at least not for someone else.  Not saying I am perfect…  sometimes, I may mention something I do not like a lot… and every so often, I may write about recent frustrations I had with an inanimate object, but…  I will not review ANYTHING on this site if I am not confident in it.  Remember…  you are visiting Trending Mom, all things TRENDING in my world!   Now take a minute and join my website will you?
